The Golden Globes kick off awards season, but they’re known for being a playfully critical event – hosts often joke about the nominees, sometimes with sharp wit. This year’s host, Nikki Glaser, continued that tradition, with many of her jokes becoming popular online. However, some suggest what she didn’t say was even more noteworthy.
I was listening to Amy Glaser on Howard Stern, and she was sharing some jokes that didn’t quite make it into her opening monologue. One of them was about Sydney Sweeney and her movie, Christy. Apparently, it’s predicted to be a pretty big flop in 2025, and that was the basis of the joke. Glaser then went on to say…
Hollywood is facing a strange situation right now: audiences aren’t really heading to cinemas. As an example, a recent film starring Sydney Sweeney, where she played a character in revealing clothing for the majority of the runtime, only earned $14 at the box office.
Glaser might have regretted highlighting a particularly unsuccessful film in Sydney Sweeney’s career. However, that movie is probably already fading from view, given her recent success with The Housemaid, which is popular enough to warrant a sequel.
It’s impossible to discuss the past year in Hollywood without mentioning artificial intelligence, and Nikki Claser definitely included it in her recent comedy routine. However, she wasn’t as focused on the idea of an AI actor; instead, she used AI as a jumping-off point to critique the established power dynamics within the industry, saying:
There’s growing worry about the implications of artificial intelligence. Recently, Tilly Norwood, the first celebrity created entirely by A.I., was reportedly sexually assaulted by three studio executives, highlighting a disturbing and unexpected issue.
Comedians often joke about Leonardo DiCaprio’s relationships, particularly his tendency to date much younger women. While Sarah Glaser did tell a joke about his girlfriends, she almost went with a different one.
Leo, you’re always squinting – are you checking to see if your girlfriend’s ID says she’s old enough? I’m just teasing, making sure her birth year starts with a ‘2’.
A rising star almost became the subject of a joke by Nikki Glaser, who had prepared a bit about Jonathan Bailey being named Sexiest Man Alive. Similar to a previous joke involving A.I., the humor wasn’t directed at Bailey himself, but at other people—many of whom were likely present when she planned to deliver it.
Okay, so Jonathan Bailey just made history as People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive, and he’s the first openly gay man to receive the title. Honestly, my initial reaction was, ‘Do we need to point out ‘openly’?’. But then I started thinking about all the previous winners, and it hit me – yeah, actually, we absolutely do. It’s a significant thing, and it’s worth acknowledging.
Some comedians don’t worry about how their jokes land, but Nikki Glaser has said she feels bad when she goes too far and never intends to offend anyone. Despite this, her jokes are still funny! You can see some of her cut jokes – and others – in the video below.
Some jokes were likely removed because they didn’t get a strong enough reaction. Others were probably considered too harsh and potentially offensive. While Jo Koy’s performance at the Golden Globes may have made some people uncomfortable, that’s probably going to continue if he hosts again.
