The visually striking, black-and-white series Spider-Noir is gaining attention as awards season approaches. Surprisingly, the upcoming show starring Nicolas Cage is expected to submit itself for Emmy consideration in a category many wouldn’t anticipate.
Spider-Noir series to compete with comedy shows in next Emmys cycle
Spider-Noir, an animated series blending the style of classic film noir with comic book action, is aiming for an Emmy as a comedy. Industry site Gold Derby reports this puts it in competition with popular comedies like Shrinking, Hacks, and The Bear, which is known for mixing humorous and dramatic elements.
Although the network hasn’t confirmed it, this new classification suggests the show will be much different than the serious detective drama it’s been advertised as.
The film’s comedic label becomes clearer when you hear how Nicolas Cage explains his performance. The Oscar-winning actor, playing Spider-Man Noir in live-action for the first time, says his take on Ben Reilly is a mix of Humphrey Bogart’s cool demeanor (70%) and Bugs Bunny’s silliness (30%). He’s also described the character as a spider awkwardly pretending to be human, according to Esquire.
Spider-Noir premieres May 25th on MGM+, and all eight episodes will be available on Prime Video starting May 27th. Viewers can choose to watch in classic black and white or a fully colored version, letting them customize how they experience the story.
The show centers on Ben Reilly (played by Nicolas Cage), a former superhero known as the Spider, now working as a private investigator in 1930s New York. The series explores how Ben is haunted by his past as the city’s protector.
It’s still uncertain if Spider-Noir will be considered a comedy by Emmy voters and audiences, and whether that categorization will ultimately be successful.
