A new report sheds light on why Monica Dutton was killed off in Marshals
Luke Grimes is reprising his popular role as Kayce Dutton in the new Yellowstone spinoff, but sadly, Kelsey Asbille, who played his wife Monica, won’t be returning. Her character is written off the show, and the series will focus on Kayce and his son Tate grieving her unexpected death.
According to new reporting in Matt Belloni’s What I’m Hearing newsletter for Puck, the decision to remove the character Monica from the show was driven, in part, by a desire to make Marshals stand out as separate from Yellowstone. This concern originated from an agreement made before Paramount+ existed and before Yellowstone became the huge hit it is today.
This agreement clarifies where shows related to Yellowstone will stream. While any new shows branching off from Yellowstone can be found on Paramount+, the original Yellowstone series itself will continue streaming on Peacock, as Peacock already had the rights since 2020. It appears the decision to leave Monica out of the Marshals series was likely a way to emphasize that it’s a spinoff, not a direct continuation of Yellowstone, and thus avoid conflicts between the companies that own Paramount+ and Peacock.
Monica’s Death Explained In Marshals
The first episode of Marshals reveals that Monica tragically dies from cancer caused by pollution from a mining company affecting the Broken Rock Reservation’s water supply. This loss not only establishes the villains of the Marshals series, but also profoundly shapes the lives of Kayce and Tate as the story begins.
Monica’s tragic death completely negates the hopeful ending Kayce briefly experiences in Yellowstone. The original series concluded with Kayce, Monica, and Tate attempting to build a fresh start, free from the drama of the Dutton family. This loss is a strong enough reason for a new spin-off series, but it also emphasizes that Marshals isn’t simply a continuation of Yellowstone.
Yellowstone’s Universe And Its Future On Paramount
Although Marshals includes familiar faces from Yellowstone like Forrie J. Smith, Denholm Merrill, Gil Birmingham, and Mo Brings Plenty, it’s a separate series and not a direct continuation of the original. Marshals functions more like a standard CBS crime drama, focusing on a lead character who becomes a U.S. Marshal, and is currently available to stream on Paramount+.
Starting May 15th, you’ll be able to stream The Dutton Ranch on Paramount+, with Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser reprising their roles as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler. This series moves to new locations and introduces a lot of fresh faces. With talks of a possible partnership between Peacock and Paramount+ offering a combined subscription, the future of both Yellowstone and Marshals on Paramount looks promising.
Marshals airs Sundays on CBS at 8 PM ET and releases the next day on Paramount+.
