New Wicked Universe Movie In Development From Original Writers

I’m so excited – it sounds like there might be more to the Wicked story! The upcoming movie, Wicked: For Good, starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, will cover the second half of the incredibly popular Broadway musical. And if you didn’t know, the musical itself was based on a fantastic novel from 1995. I can’t wait to see how they bring it all to life!

I just read the most interesting thing! Apparently, Stephen Schwartz, who wrote the music for Wicked, said he and Winnie Holzman (who wrote the book) are brainstorming new stories set in the world of the Wicked novels – the ones by Gregory Maguire. But here’s the cool part: it won’t be a sequel focusing on Glinda and Elphaba. They’re exploring other characters and storylines within that same universe, which I think is a brilliant idea!

Schwartz acknowledged they’re exploring potential projects, but stressed they’ll only move forward if there’s a strong creative reason. He stated that, as far as he knows, no one has proposed an idea compelling enough to warrant a project yet. You can find his complete statement below.

Look, I’m not convinced there is a perfect next step, honestly. What Winnie Holzman and I are working on isn’t a direct sequel to Wicked. I feel like Glinda and Elphaba’s story is pretty much wrapped up, you know? But there’s so much more in Gregory Maguire’s original books that could be interesting. We’re actually talking about something different – not a continuation of their story, but something that exists alongside it, a kind of companion piece. That’s the way I’d describe it right now.

Ideally, any continuation of the story would need a good reason beyond just being profitable. So far, I haven’t heard any ideas that would actually justify continuing it.

The news follows reports that Wicked: For Good has earned the highest preview screening numbers of any movie released domestically this year. While it’s still too early to know how well it will do overall, current estimates suggest the film could eventually gross between $700 million and $1.2 billion worldwide.

More to come…
