Sony’s upcoming animated Venom film might be leaving out a popular element from the Tom Hardy live-action movies, which weren’t well-received by Marvel fans.
Sony announced last Friday that Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, known for their work on Final Destination Bloodlines, will direct an animated Venom film. The producers will include Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Matt Tolmach, who all worked on the live-action Venom movies, as well as Tom Hardy, who played Eddie Brock/Venom in those films.
The new Venom movie will boldly go where no animated Spider-Man movie has gone before
According to reliable sources, Sony is aiming for an R rating for its upcoming animated Venom movie. This would be a first for the Venom franchise, as the previous three films were rated PG-13. It would also make it Sony’s second R-rated movie based on a Marvel character, following ‘Kraven the Hunter’ which is scheduled for release in 2024.
Fans of Venom have often wished for a more mature, R-rated movie, as the character is much more aggressive and willing to use deadly force than Spider-Man. An R-rating would also help Venom stand out from Sony’s other Spider-Man animated films, which are rated PG-13.
It’s easy to see why Sony is making another Venom film. The three Venom movies – 2018’s Venom, 2021’s Let There Be Carnage, and 2024’s The Last Dance – have been Sony’s biggest success within its Spider-Man Universe, earning over $1.8 billion globally, even though critics weren’t consistently impressed.
Although there’s been talk of Tom Hardy potentially playing Venom in both Avengers: Secret Wars and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, these appearances haven’t been officially confirmed. In fact, rumors about his involvement have become much quieter recently.
Even if Tom Hardy doesn’t reprise his role as Venom, Sony still has a lot of Spider-Man projects planned. One of these is ‘Brand New Day,’ and another is ‘Spider-Noir,’ an eight-episode series coming to Prime Video in May. Nicolas Cage will star as Ben Reilly, also known as The Spider, in the series.
The animated Venom movie does not yet have a release window.
