Warner Bros. plans to continue the Conjuring series, and has announced the next installment. The Conjuring: Last Rites, slated for release in 2025, was previously thought to be the final film in the main Conjuring series, which began in 2013. The larger Conjuring Universe, including spin-offs like Annabelle and The Nun, has become a very successful shared universe, earning a total of $2.7 billion worldwide across its nine films.
Warner Bros. is continuing the popular Conjuring film series with a new installment scheduled for release in 2027. Titled The Conjuring: First Communion, the movie is set to hit theaters on September 10, 2027. Rodrigue Huart will direct the film, working from a screenplay by Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg. Details about the story and who will star in the movie have not yet been revealed.
‘The Conjuring’ Universe Is Far From Over

Warner Bros. Pictures
Originally advertised as the last film in The Conjuring series, The Conjuring: Last Rites proved to be a huge box office success when it opened on September 5, 2025. It earned $84 million in its opening weekend – the highest ever for a film in The Conjuring franchise and the third-biggest opening for a horror movie, following It and It: Chapter Two. The film ultimately made $177.8 million in the US and $494.7 million worldwide, with a production budget of just $55 million. Given its success, it became clear that Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema wouldn’t be ending The Conjuring series after all.
Producers had begun discussing the possibility of expanding The Conjuring universe with a “Phase 2” shortly before the release of Last Rites. The first concrete step towards this expansion came on September 9, 2025, when an original series was announced for HBO Max, just four days after Last Rites premiered in cinemas. Nancy Won, known for her work on shows like Jessica Jones and Jericho, will be the writer, executive producer, and showrunner for the new series.

The Conjuring: First Communion is scheduled for release a little over two years after The Conjuring: Last Rites. The first weekend in September, following Labor Day, has proven to be a successful time to release horror movies, and the Conjuring franchise has consistently used this window with films like The Nun, The Nun II, and Last Rites. Although the latest sequel performed well at the box office, it remains to be seen if audiences were primarily interested in what was advertised as the final installment.
