New photos have been revealed for the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The show, based on George R. R. Martin’s stories, is set 100 years before the original Game of Thrones and centers on the journey of Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall (played by Peter Claffey) and his young companion, Prince Aegon “Egg” Targaryen (Dexter Sol Ansell).
New photos from the show give us a closer look at familiar characters and introduce previously unseen members of the Targaryen family during this time period. We get our first glimpse of Prince Maekar Targaryen (played by Sam Spruell, pictured on horseback), and his brother, Prince Baelor (Bertie Carvel, shown sitting at a table).
I’m so excited! “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is officially coming out on January 18, 2026. They just released some new pictures, and you can check them out below!

Dedicated viewers noticed that Baelor is wearing the pin signifying the Hand of the King, which makes sense as he’s currently serving in that position while his father reigns. A new image of Maekar’s eldest son, Prince Aerion (played by Finn Bennett), has also been released – he appears to be on horseback, potentially in the same scene as Maekar. HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery are also showcasing characters who aren’t members of the Targaryen family.
The cast also includes Daniel Ings as Lord Lyonel Baratheon, Shaun Thomas as Ser Raymon Fossoway, and Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle, adding depth to the world created by George R.R. Martin. After the controversial ending of Game of Thrones, the franchise is regaining popularity thanks to compelling prequel stories and talented actors bringing these characters to life.
Though A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been picked up for a second season, House of the Dragon will return in 2026 with season 3, and plans are already underway for season 4. The first Game of Thrones prequel to receive positive reviews, House of the Dragon is set long before A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and tells the story of a violent civil war within the Targaryen family, sparked by a disagreement over who should inherit the throne.

Martin revealed that a new Game of Thrones series is being planned, and it could be their most difficult project so far. House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms were based on already-written books, but a sequel would need to create a completely new storyline and address the criticisms of how the original series ended.
It’s clear that Game of Thrones is still a major success for HBO, and they plan to keep building on that world as long as the shows are well-received and make money. While some fans are unsure about continuing the story, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms looks like a promising new series that will honor the original.
