After David Corenswet appears as Superman in July 2025, Milly Alcock will star in her own Supergirl movie this summer – the first solo film for the character in over 40 years. Following a brief appearance in Superman, Alcock’s film draws inspiration from Tom King’s Woman of Tomorrow comic book series. The story follows Supergirl on a galactic adventure with a young girl named Ruthye Marye Knoll (played by Eve Ridley), as they both seek justice after losing their families.
The first previews for this film showed a grand space adventure, focusing on the strong relationship between Kara and Krypto the Super-dog before trouble strikes. With the release date near, new promotional content is building excitement for one of the universe’s most formidable heroes to take center stage.
DC Studios recently shared a sneak peek behind the scenes of the upcoming Supergirl movie. The teaser includes brief comments from DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn, director Craig Gillespie, and stars Milly Alcock and Jason Momoa. Along with new clips from the film, Gunn described Kara Zor-El as incredibly powerful, and praised Alcock for bringing a cool, edgy energy to the role. Jason Momoa added that this Supergirl isn’t afraid to fight.
Gillespie went on to highly praise Alcock, saying she was doing an amazing job and truly embodying the character. He stated he couldn’t picture anyone else playing the role, and that she was perfectly bringing the Kryptonian heroine to life on screen.
James Gunn has indicated that Supergirl will remain powerful in the new DC Universe, hinting that Milly Alcock will deliver a strong performance in the upcoming movie. Jason Gillespie and Jason Momoa, having worked with Alcock on this film, appear to agree. This suggests Kara Zor-El will have a significant role in future DC projects.
Currently, the movie focuses on Kara battling numerous villains, most notably Krem of the Yellow Hills, played by Matthias Schoenarts. Krem has a significant effect on both Kara and Ruthye, as he was responsible for the death of Ruthye’s family. He’s also infamous for severely injuring Krypto the Super-Dog in the comics, which motivates Kara to seek revenge with everything she has.
Jason Momoa will be working closely with director James Gunn in the film, finally playing the role of Lobo – a character he’s long wanted to portray – after completing his time as Aquaman in the previous DC Universe. The trailer shows Lobo, an alien bounty hunter, riding his motorcycle and fighting Supergirl, but the extent of his involvement in the movie remains to be seen.
Supergirl will debut in theaters on Jun. 26, 2026.
