New Potential Super Smash Bros. Movie Update Is Bad News

Despite the huge success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie – which earned over a billion dollars worldwide – Nintendo and Illumination executives have offered a discouraging update regarding the possibility of a Super Smash Bros. crossover film.

The recent movie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, included characters from other popular Nintendo games. But in a recent interview, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri explained that this doesn’t automatically mean a whole universe of Nintendo-based movies is planned.

Nintendo and Illumination executives talk about potential Super Smash Bros. movie

Following the reveal of characters like Pikmin, ROB, and Fox McCloud, Shigeru Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri spoke with Polygon about the possibility of a crossover movie similar to Super Smash Bros. They explained that their current focus is on more immediate projects. Miyamoto clarified that a full crossover featuring all Nintendo characters isn’t planned, though he jokingly noted his personal rule that Pikmin is welcome in any Nintendo game.

The longtime Nintendo designer shared that working on the new movie reminded him just how diverse and capable the Mario characters are. He mentioned they had enough characters for the film, but still wanted to include some fun surprises and hidden cameos. He revealed one secret character has a significant role and hinted that we might see similar character introductions in future movies.

Chris Meledandri explained that when making these films, their focus isn’t on building a larger, connected story universe. Instead, they concentrate on creating enjoyable moments within each scene. He described the overall approach as more of a happy accident than a carefully planned strategy.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie debuts today, April 1, in US theaters.
