New Photos Confirm Loki Season 2 Gender-Swapped One Major Character

In the casting for Season 2 of the Disney+ series starring Tom Hiddleston as Loki, a character previously identified as male changed to female during the process. The second season followed Loki’s journey in the time-manipulating organization known as the Time Variance Authority (TVA), and introduced several new characters. Among them was General Dox, the commander of the Minutemen.

In the official art book for Marvel Studios’ Loki Season 2, it’s been disclosed that General Dox, portrayed by Kate Dickie and presented as female in the series, was initially conceived as a male character. The artwork depicts a masculine version of General Dox, donning various conceptualizations of a military TVA uniform.

Christine Wada, responsible for Loki’s wardrobe, noted in the book that General Dox underwent a transformation during the audition phase, shifting into a female role. However, this transition did not influence the design process.

In a shift from the original male character, General Dox was reimagined as female. We aimed to incorporate a unique take on a familiar military aesthetic within the 1950s setting of the TVA, which we were developing.

Wada noted that Dox’s costume designs served to clearly establish the social hierarchy within the TVA, aiming to make Dox appear as the elite leader.

Wada mentioned that the costumes designed for Dox were intended to reflect and emphasize the class structure of the TVA, with the goal of making Dox appear as the top-tier figure.

In Wada’s words: “Using our costumes, I aimed to portray the hierarchical structure within the TVA. By adding details such as the sash or robe-like design with the distinctive swath across the right chest, I experimented with pushing the boundaries to make General Dox appear as the highest rank. We printed numerous medals with faces modeled after the Time Keepers using 3D printing technology.

As a dedicated cinephile, I must say that, even with the genre-bending twists, Richard’s character in the series bears striking resemblance to certain concepts. In the upcoming season 2 of Loki, Dox will don a majestic military uniform, complete with embellished shoulder pads and a medley of medals – quite the sight to behold!

In the second season of Loki, General Dox made an appearance across three episodes, holding a significant leadership role within the organization. Subsequently, she led a splinter group of faithful followers with a mission to eliminate all divergent timelines, which earned her a reputation as one of Marvel’s most formidable antagonists.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that other characters also experienced substantial redesigns throughout the development process, just like Dox.

In Season 2 of “Loki,” the character Ouroboros, often referred to as O.B., was another cherished cast member, portrayed by Academy Award-winning actor Ke Huy Quan. Interestingly, we find in the “Loki” Season 2 artbook that the design for O.B. drew inspiration from a blend of both male and female aesthetics.

Jackson Sze, who served as the visual development supervisor for Loki, revealed in the book that extensive research was carried out before the casting decision was made. This research encompassed examining a wide array of costume designs and visual styles to establish the appearance of O.B., portrayed as a long-term employee of TVA. The designers drew inspiration from vintage work uniforms of railroad workers and laborers from the 1920s through the 1940s for O.B.’s distinctive look.

As I was brought on board for the project, it became clear that the ultimate look of O.B., including his buttoned-up workwear and distinct green accents, would align seamlessly with the aesthetic established in the preceding seasons.

The second and concluding part of the Disney+ series “Loki,” which features Tom Hiddleston as the trickster deity initially introduced in the Marvel Studios’ “Thor” movies, was released. In addition to Hiddleston, the show also featured Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Sophia Di Martino. Michael Waldron is credited with its creation.

Marvel Studios’ History with Gender-Swapped Characters

Marvel Studios can lean on a wealth of comic book background when developing characters for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, yet they are not hesitant to modify or change these characters to suit their storylines.

In modern times, Marvel has begun to reimagine some of its major characters by changing their genders. For instance, in the 2021 movie “Black Widow,” the character Taskmaster, who is often depicted as male, was played by Olga Kurylenko, a woman. Similarly, the Marvel production “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” featured a female Silver Surfer, which deviated from the usual male representation. Interestingly, this change was based on Shalla-Bal, a female character from the comics who serves as the Silver Surfer.

The primary distinction between these characters, Loki specifically, and O.B. and Dox, lies in their origins. Unlike their comic book counterparts, Loki’s versions in the Disney+ series were initially conceived for the show, granting the creative team greater flexibility to shape and modify them as required, rather than being bound by established comic book designs.
