New Ninja Turtles And Sonic Movies Just Got Announced, And I Have One Big Hope For Each Of Them

Paramount Pictures has two very popular franchises: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Sonic the Hedgehog. Paramount owns the rights to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and has a licensing agreement with Sega for Sonic the Hedgehog movies. Fans already knew about upcoming films for both series, but today brought even more exciting news. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is scheduled to be released in March 2027, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2 will follow in September of the same year.

Paramount has announced release dates for new movies in both the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Sonic the Hedgehog franchises in 2028. The next Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles live-action film is scheduled for November 17, 2028, followed by a currently unnamed Sonic the Hedgehog event film on December 22. Producer Neal H. Moritz is overseeing both projects, but details are scarce. Until more information is revealed, I’m hoping to see some exciting developments with both the new Ninja Turtles and Sonic movies.

What I Want From The Sonic The Hedgehog Spinoff

To be honest, I’m not very familiar with the Sonic the Hedgehog series, only having seen the movies and played the games a bit when I was younger. However, Keanu Reeves’ portrayal of Shadow the Hedgehog was a standout part of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 for me while I was watching it on Paramount+. Although it seemed like Shadow died with Dr. Robotnik, the post-credits scene thankfully showed that he actually survived.

As a huge Sonic fan, I thought the post-credits scene in the third movie – with Amy Rose saving Sonic from those Metal Sonic bots – already sets up a really promising fourth film. Honestly, I don’t think Sonic 4 needs Shadow to be a success. Don’t get me wrong, I’d be thrilled to see him, but Shadow is such a cool character, he deserves his own movie! If Knuckles got a whole series on Paramount+, why can’t Shadow have his moment in the spotlight with a full-length film? He’s definitely earned it.

What I Want From The Next Live-Action Ninja Turtles Movie

Since 1990, five live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies have come out, with the most recent being Out of the Shadows in 2016. While fans often feel nostalgic for the original film, none of them have been particularly well-received by critics. Hopefully, the newest reboot will break this pattern and maybe even reach the level of praise that Mutant Mayhem earned in 2023. Regardless, I think the next Ninja Turtles movie has a good chance of being better than previous installments by leaving out the villain, Shredder, entirely.

Shredder is the Turtles’ biggest enemy, which explains why he’s always in their movies. But honestly, we’ve seen way too much of him. Even the recent Mutant Mayhem included him at the end to hint at a sequel. I’d actually like the upcoming live-action reboot to avoid him completely – no appearances or even mentions. I’m not saying he should never return in a future movie if this series continues, but this particular TMNT film would be better off with a villain fans like, but who hasn’t been overused.

It’s still early days for these upcoming films, but we’re hoping to learn more about them in 2026. In the meantime, you can enjoy the existing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Sonic the Hedgehog movies on Paramount+, or check out our 2026 movie schedule to see what else is coming next year.
