New Grey’s Anatomy Spinoff Officially Releasing Next Year With Major Location Change

A new Grey’s Anatomy spinoffis in the works at ABC, with Shonda Rhimes returning.

According to Deadline, ABC has ordered a new series based on Grey’s Anatomy that will be set in Texas. Shonda Rhimes and Meg Marinis, the current showrunner of Grey’s Anatomy, will co-create, write, and executive produce the spinoff. The series, from Shondaland and 20th Television, is expected to premiere in 2027.

As a long-time fan of Grey’s Anatomy, I’m excited to hear Ellen Pompeo is staying involved with this new spinoff! She’ll be an executive producer, and from what I’ve heard, it’s a really compelling story. It’s an edgy drama set in a remote West Texas medical center – basically, the last hope for healthcare in the area. This will be the third Grey’s universe show to hit ABC, following Private Practice and Station 19, so they clearly know how to build a successful medical drama!

While information about the new Grey’s Anatomy spinoff, set in Texas, is still limited, sources say it will follow a fresh group of doctors. Like previous Grey’s spinoffs, it’s expected to have links to the original series. Megan Marinis, an executive producer on Grey’s, shared a statement about the news. She discussed her long-time work on Grey’s and her personal connection to Texas. You can read her full statement below.

I’m thrilled to be growing the world of Grey’s Anatomy! This new project will introduce fresh characters and stories with the same emotional depth and strong connections that viewers have enjoyed in Grey’s for over 20 years – and it’s all set in my home state of Texas. I’m incredibly thankful to Shonda Rhimes for creating such a captivating universe and I’m lucky to be involved.

More to come…
