Amazon’s upcoming series based on God of War is building an impressive cast. The show will likely focus on the recent games set in Norse mythology, following Kratos and his son Atreus, and is expected to be very popular when it arrives in 2027.
We’ve recently gotten our first look at Kratos and Atreus in live-action, and the show has been steadily announcing its cast of characters and Norse gods. One recent casting choice is particularly interesting because of a very specific – and surprisingly delightful – detail.
Amazon’s God of War Series Already Has An Impressive Cast
Amazon’s upcoming God of War series is already shaping up to be a high-quality adaptation, with a talented cast indicating significant investment in capturing the spirit of the popular video games. Ryan Hurst, known for his voice work as Thor in the games, will portray Kratos, and Callum Vinson will play his son, Atreus.
In addition to Kratos and Atreus’ central father-son relationship, the show will feature Mandy Patinkin as Odin and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor.
The cast also includes Max Parker as Heimdall, Teresa Palmer as Lady Sif, and Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as the dwarf brothers Brok and Sindri. Louis Cunningham and Ben Chapple will play Thor’s sons, Magni and Modi. Fans will be thrilled to hear Alastair Duncan is returning to play Mimir’s head.
What really got my attention was the announcement that Ed Skrein will be playing Baldur in the God of War series – he’s the son of Odin and brother of Thor.
Ed Skrein Is Playing Baldur (Which Is Basically Deadpool’s Ajax)
In the 2018 game God of War, Baldur is a particularly disturbing and challenging Norse enemy that Kratos and Atreus encounter during their journey.
The games don’t show Baldur as fortunate; instead, he’s presented as cursed by his mother, Freya. This curse grants him near-immortality, but at a terrible price: he can’t experience any physical feelings, whether pain or pleasure. This inability to feel fuels his intense anger and makes him a formidable, yet volatile, enforcer for Odin.
Interestingly, this situation is very similar to a famous role Ed Skrein played in the 2016 movie Deadpool – his character, Francis/Ajax. Like Baldur, who couldn’t regrow limbs, Ajax was unable to feel pain, a result of experiments that made him physically stronger. Both characters were also cold, emotionless, and showed no regret for their actions.
It’s interesting that Skrein is playing another character with a similar personality and abilities almost ten years after his role as Ajax. However, I’m still really looking forward to seeing his take on Baldur, as this Norse villain seems much more unpredictable and wild than Ajax was.
You know, watching Josh Skrein as Ajax got me thinking. I really think that performance had to have helped him land the role of Baldur. He totally nailed that detached, almost consequence-free villain vibe in Deadpool, and that ability to play someone so cold and unfeeling definitely carried over – it’s something Baldur absolutely needs!
If you need an actor to portray a seemingly immortal, pain-resistant warrior, why not hire someone with experience? It will be interesting to see how Carl Urban’s performance as Baldur in Skein differs from his work in Marvel, and how those roles influence each other.
God of War is expected to begin streaming on Amazon Prime Video in 2027.
