New G.I. Joe Update Is Good & Bad News

There’s news about the future of G.I. Joe. While Paramount Pictures decided not to pursue a script from Max Landis, they are still developing a new installment in the action series and are currently reviewing other options, including a script from Danny McBride.

Paramount to not move forward with Max Landis’ G.I. Joe project

Paramount Pictures won’t be making a new G.I. Joe movie based on a script from the writer of American Ultra.

Variety reports that Max Landis was originally hired to create a new movie idea based on the popular action series and Hasbro toys. However, the studio has decided to move forward with a different approach and won’t be using his concept.

Even though they won’t be using Landis’ version, Paramount still plans to make another film in the series. The studio is currently exploring new ideas and considering scripts from different writers. Danny McBride, known for his work on “Righteous Gemstones,” is one of the writers contributing a script for the next installment.

Earlier this year, Max Landis’s work on the G.I. Joe movie gained some attention. He hadn’t worked on a big studio film in several years, following accusations of misconduct that surfaced from 2017 to 2019.

Around that time, several women came forward with accusations of sexual and emotional abuse against the 40-year-old. This caused his management company to drop him as a client, and multiple projects he was working on at different studios were also canceled.

According to Variety, Paramount decided to change direction with the film’s script because of creative differences, not because they were abandoning the franchise.

Lorenzo di Bonaventura has been a producer on the G.I. Joe films for many years and is still involved. Paramount is currently considering different ideas for how to move the action series forward.
