Florida officials recently announced progress on a potential high-speed underground transportation system connecting Universal Orlando Resort. On February 11th, the Shingle Creek Transit & Utility Community Development District Board approved starting contract talks with The Boring Company, founded by Elon Musk.

The proposed system would work similarly to The Boring Company’s Las Vegas Convention Center Loop, using Tesla vehicles to take people directly from one point to another, rather than following a set route. It’s being described as a fast, on-demand transportation service. Plans also suggest that vehicles like the Robovan could be added later to carry both passengers and small deliveries.

Staffing

TBC has assigned eight internal experts to work on engineering, tunneling, and similar areas. They’ve also contracted with six subcontractors to manage fire safety, communications systems, soil stabilization, and concrete work.

So, The Boring Company is basically saying they’re ready to roll – they’ve got all the machines and the crew right here, just waiting on the green light from the authorities. They’re promising to get this project done as fast as possible, as soon as all the permits are approved. It sounds like they’re eager to show what they can do, and they’re putting the ball in the district’s court now.

The school board’s decision to start negotiations is the first official move toward a potential agreement, but it doesn’t guarantee a final deal. Board members made it clear that further reviews and approvals are necessary before any building can start. Ultimately, any contract reached would still need to be approved by a public vote.

Officials emphasized that the project is still being explored. They explained that details like the exact route, a firm timeline, and specific funding commitments still need to be worked out through further discussion.

Broader Context for Tunneling Projects

Universal Orlando’s tunnel proposal is one of several projects The Boring Company is currently working on. Recently, Nashville’s airport authority approved a deal with the company to build the “Music City Loop,” a tunnel connecting the airport to downtown. The Boring Company will handle the design, construction, and ongoing maintenance of the tunnel without any direct cost to the city or taxpayers, as part of a long-term agreement.

The project should bring in money through licensing fees and charges for pick-up and drop-off services during the agreement period, but construction can’t start until the necessary permits are approved.

Regional Transportation Context

To ease traffic problems in Central Florida, tourism and transportation officials have explored several infrastructure improvements, such as light rail systems, dedicated bus lanes, and the proposed Sunshine Corridor transportation network.
