The new animated film, David, has received a strong response, earning a high score on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s a faith-based movie that retells the biblical story of David – from his famous fight with Goliath to his journey of becoming a king. The film was co-directed by Phil Cunningham and Brent Dawes, and is being distributed by Angel Studios.
As a huge movie fan, I’m really curious to see how David does. It’s coming out on December 19th, right before Christmas, and that timing could be key. It’s facing some tough competition from films like SpongeBob: Search for SquarePants and the still-popular Zootopia 2, but being so close to the holidays gives it a real shot at doing well. That Christmas window is going to be super important for its success, I think.
The movie David has been well-received by audiences and currently boasts a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter. This high score, based on over 250 verified reviews, indicates widespread positive feedback.
Critics haven’t been as enthusiastic about the film David so far, but overall it’s still received positively. Currently, it has a 70% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on reviews from 23 critics.
Angel Studios has released its second major animated film of the year, following The King of Kings, which told the story of Jesus and featured well-known voice actors like Mark Hamill. While David doesn’t have the same level of celebrity voice talent, it still benefits from being an Angel Studios production.
Both The King of Kings and David have resonated with viewers. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics (a 61% approval rating), The King of Kings earned a 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with feedback from over 2,500 viewers, and was designated a “Verified Hot” film.
Viewers who enjoyed The King of Kings showed their support by going to the movies, resulting in a worldwide box office total of $79.7 million for the film produced by Angel.

This impressive result was achieved with a release plan much like the one used before. The film debuted in the United States on April 11th, just before Easter. Now, David is hoping to achieve the same success by releasing his film around another important Christian holiday.
Both The King of Kings and David have proven there’s a clear audience for faith-based animated films. While critics haven’t always been impressed, viewers are watching and enjoying these movies, which is great news for Angel Studios as David is released during the holidays.
