Stephen Amell is most famous for his role as Oliver Queen, also known as Green Arrow, in the TV series Arrow. This show kicked off the popular Arrowverse on The CW, which later expanded to include series like The Flash and Superman & Lois. Because of this, many DC Comics fans appreciate his work.
Stephen Amell recently starred in the TV shows Heels and Suits LA, but unfortunately, both were canceled. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, he’s taking on a leading role in a Baywatch reboot. The original Baywatch, a popular lifeguard drama that ran from 1989 to 2000, was a huge hit and lasted for 11 seasons.
According to executive producer and showrunner Matt Nix, Stephen Amell was perfect for the reboot of Baywatch from the very beginning. Nix stated that Amell brought the necessary combination of passion, strength, and heroic presence to the role. He’s a leading man who can handle both the action and the emotional depth of the story while keeping things entertaining, and the team is thrilled to be working with him.

The original Baywatch series was famous for its dramatic storylines, focusing on the lives of lifeguards, and its iconic slow-motion scenes of people running on the beach. It made stars out of actors like Pamela Anderson, Carmen Electra, Jason Momoa, and David Hasselhoff, who played the lead lifeguard, Mitch Buchannon. Now, actor Stephen Amell will be taking on the role of Mitch’s son, Hobie Buchannon – a character previously played by Brandon Call and Jeremy Jackson. Hobie is all grown up and continuing the family tradition of lifeguarding, a common theme in these kinds of stories.
While Paramount released a Baywatch movie with Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron in 2017, it’s been a long time since there was a Baywatch TV series. Now, experienced director McG will helm the pilot episode of a new Baywatch show. McG is known for successfully rebooting older properties – he directed the 2000 Charlie’s Angels movie starring Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu, and Cameron Diaz, and its 2003 sequel, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. Interestingly, Charlie’s Angels is also getting rebooted! Given his background, McG seems like a solid choice to bring Baywatch back to television.
Filming for the Baywatch series is planned to begin this spring on Fox. While the rest of the cast and a firm release date are still unknown, the network hopes to premiere the show during the 2026-2027 television season.
