New ‘Batman: Knightfall’ Animated Movie Adaptation Sets 2026 Release Date

Good news for Batman fans! They won’t have to wait until 2027 for the next movie. While there were rumors about changes to the release schedule for The Batman Part II and The Brave & The Bold, those aren’t true. Instead, a new live-action Batman film based on a classic, intense storyline is coming this summer and could be just as good as the other Batman movies.

According to Variety, major animation studios are gearing up for the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France, a huge celebration of animation. Warner Bros. Animation, DC Studios, and Warner Home Entertainment will be presenting an animated movie based on Batman: Knightfall at the festival. Interestingly, this appears to be the first part of a planned three-movie series, with two more films already in development.

The animated movie Batman: Knightfall kicks off a major story arc inspired by a famous series of Batman comics. Originally announced with a more awkward title, Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall, the current title clearly signals the dark and intense story fans can expect. The filmmakers are adapting the comic book storyline as a trilogy, mirroring the three parts of the original comic: Knightfall, Knightquest, and KnightsEnd.

Even if you don’t recognize the name, you might know this story as the one where Bane breaks Batman’s spine. Christopher Nolan used parts of the “Knightfall” comic book series in his 2012 movie, “The Dark Knight Rises.” The new animated version will likely be a more faithful adaptation of the original comics, which is typical for DC animated films. Jeff Wamester, who previously directed “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” “Justice League: Warworld,” and “Justice Society: World War II,” is directing the animated film.

The Annecy Festival revealed that the first part of Batman: Knightfall is approximately 1 hour, 18 minutes, and 31 seconds long, consistent with the typical length of DC animated movies. While details about how and when it will be released are still forthcoming – likely clarified by the festival – it will probably be available to rent or stream first, with a Blu-ray release likely to follow. The release dates for the next two parts of the Knightfall trilogy haven’t been announced yet, but based on previous multi-part releases like Batman: The Long Halloween, they’ll probably come out relatively soon after each other.

Batman fans have a lot to be excited about in the near future. A sequel to The Batman is highly anticipated, though it’s been delayed as DC works on its plans for The Brave and the Bold. A movie focusing on the villain Clayface is also in development. On television, Batman continues to be popular with the visually striking animated series Batman: Caped Crusader and the family-friendly Bat-Fam. And with Batman: Knightfall coming later this year, there’s no shortage of new content for DC’s iconic hero.
