New Batman Beyond Joins Surprising DC Team Led by Mister Terrific

A surprising take on Batman Beyond has become the newest member of a superhero team in Justice League Unlimited.

DC Comics’ Justice League Unlimited began in November. The newest installment, Justice League Unlimited #12, features writing by Mark Waid, artwork by Dan Mora, colors by Tamra Bonvillain, and lettering by Ariana Maher.

After the “We Are Yesterday” storyline, Justice League Unlimited #12 features Mister Terrific gathering a team of heroes to evacuate Earth while DC K.O. causes widespread chaos. The evacuation proves difficult because Neron, a powerful demon, gave Earth’s villains enhanced abilities in exchange for their souls – a deal that ultimately didn’t work out as planned.

This shows that even minor villains, such as Polka Dot Man, can pose a serious threat – in this case, almost defeating Atom and Batgirl right at the start of the story.

Who is the new Batman Beyond?

With many of DC’s main heroes busy with the DC K.O. event, Mister Terrific assembles a team of nine heroes who were lost in time during the ‘We Are Yesterday’ storyline. This team includes a version of Batman Beyond, but instead of the usual hero Terry McGinnis, it’s Tim Drake – the third Robin from the main DC comics – who’s wearing the Batman suit.

Mister Terrific explained to the heroes who’d been pulled from their own time that the temporal chaos they experienced wasn’t just caused by Gorilla Grodd, as they initially believed. It’s a much larger problem – the very fabric of the past and future is crumbling. The current Superman and other heroes are working to fix this, and they’re hopeful they can succeed. For now, the time stream has stopped actively breaking down, but that also means heroes like them are stranded in the present, with no way to return to their own timelines.

You’re each like a single moment pulled from your life, existing on its own without any lasting impact. You aren’t the person you believe yourself to be; you’re more like a shadow of the hero you represent, a separate being. If our heroes win and fix what Darkseid has done, the timeline will return to normal. At that point, you’ll simply fade away, and your original self will continue living, completely unaware you ever existed.

After the DC K.O. event finishes, the Tim Drake version of Batman Beyond will probably no longer exist. But he’s currently helping the team, and the comic ends with him and the others immediately heading into Hell.

The latest issue of Justice League Unlimited is now available at comic book stores, with artwork by Mora on the main cover and alternate covers by Nathan Szerdy, Derrick Chew, Jeff Spokes, and Kevin Wada.
