Neuromancer Isn’t 2026’s Only Cyberpunk TV Show

As a sci-fi fan, I’ve been thrilled to see the genre make a comeback on TV lately, but there’s one corner of it that’s been seriously overlooked… until now. Cyberpunk – that gritty, futuristic world where humans and technology collide, usually in a pretty bleak setting – has always been a bit of a cult favorite. We’ve had little bursts of interest over the years, going back to the 80s and 90s, but honestly? 2026 is shaping up to be the year for cyberpunk on television. It’s a huge deal, and I, for one, am incredibly excited!

Cyberpunk, a subgenre of science fiction, hasn’t always been considered mainstream, leading studios to hesitate investing heavily in related TV shows and movies. While shows like Severance touch on some cyberpunk themes, dedicated fans have often had to look beyond television for content. However, the number of cyberpunk projects planned for release in 2026 indicates that this may be changing, suggesting growing public interest in the genre.

Multiple Cyberpunk TV Projects Will Land in 2026

Warner Bros. Pictures

Cyberpunk enthusiasts have had limited new content in recent years, often finding themselves revisiting classics like Blade Runner or Altered Carbon. While The Creator (2023) offered a fresh take, 2026 promises a significant wave of new cyberpunk stories. Leading the charge is Apple TV’s adaptation of William Gibson’s groundbreaking 1984 novel, Neuromancer – a hugely influential work often considered a cornerstone of the cyberpunk genre, and its arrival on screen is a major event.

2026 Cyberpunk TV Shows
Show Notes
Neuromancer Live-action adaptation of William Gibson’s 1984 novel
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2
Ghost in the Shell Anime reboot
Blade Runner 2099 Not technically cyberpunk, but appeals to the same audience

In 2026, fans can look forward to a fresh take on Ghost in the Shell with a complete anime reboot based directly on the original manga, not a continuation of the earlier series. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will also return for a second season, following the success of its first season in 2022. The Blade Runner 2099 miniseries is also coming out this year, but it’s worth noting that while it’s closely related to cyberpunk, it doesn’t quite fit perfectly within the genre. It’s heavily influenced by the visual style of Ridley Scott’s 1982 film, which helped define cyberpunk’s look, and it holds a special place for fans of the genre, even if it’s not strictly cyberpunk itself.

2026’s Cyberpunk TV Show Renaissance Will Be Vital to the Sci-Fi Subgenre’s Future

Netflix

As a big fan of cyberpunk, I’ve noticed it’s surprisingly hard to get a really successful project in this genre. Even things like the Blade Runner films, which are basically cyberpunk masterpieces, didn’t do great when they first came out. We fans love them, but Hollywood needs movies and shows to make money, not just please a niche audience. And honestly, even really good shows like Altered Carbon just couldn’t keep viewers hooked long enough to last. It’s a shame, because the potential is always there.

The future of cyberpunk shows on television is at a critical point. While Ghost in the Shell and a potential Season 2 of Edge Runners have a strong foundation thanks to their existing anime status and established franchises, Blade Runner 2099 faces an uphill battle after previous film failures, and Neuromancer is an untested concept for TV. The success or failure of these shows will likely determine if cyberpunk remains a growing genre on television after 2026, or if it fades into obscurity.
