Cordelia Cupp is the female equivalent of Benoit Blanc, the detective from the Knives Out movies. Played by Uzo Aduba, she’s a delightfully odd consultant who helps the police solve difficult crimes – and she loves birdwatching! When the White House Chief of Staff is found dead during a state dinner with the Australian prime minister, Cordelia is called in to investigate. The goal is for her to solve the mystery quickly and discreetly before the night ends.

Cordelia arrives quickly and immediately starts investigating. She’s interesting because she’s a keen observer, asks unusual questions, and picks up on details others miss. Beneath her quirky exterior, she’s actually very perceptive and trying to figure out what really happened, often by interviewing the eccentric people involved – and that’s where things get truly entertaining.

This eight-part series features a new character and their perspective in each episode – or, at least, their version of events. Every story feels unique, whether it’s from the pastry chef who argued with the victim just before he died, or the president’s advisor who seems overly eager to wrap up the investigation. As you watch, you’ll be trying to decide who’s being honest and who’s hiding something. It’s a show that encourages you to form your own theories, because almost everyone has secrets, even if those secrets don’t mean they committed a crime.

Watching Cordelia investigate is captivating – you can tell she’s making progress, even if it’s not always clear where she’s headed. Randall Park shines as FBI Agent Edwin Park, providing humor to this already engaging detective show. He’s frustrated by being left out of the main investigation, but also fascinated by how Cordelia works, and secretly a little envious of her skills.

Why ‘The Residence’ Is So Bingeable

I completely devoured The Residence over a weekend – it’s one of those shows that just grips you and doesn’t let go. Just when you think you’ve solved a mystery, another twist comes along and throws everything into question. It’s a brilliantly complex story where every subplot cleverly connects to the main plot. Honestly, it’s a wonderfully frustrating experience – you’re desperate to find out who did it, but you’re enjoying every minute of the ride!

The show boasts a fantastic cast, featuring Giancarlo Esposito (who stepped in after the passing of Andrew Braugher, originally cast in the part), Molly Griggs, Ken Marino, Susan Kelechi Watson, Jason Lee, Bronson Pinchot, Jane Curtin, and even Kylie Minogue. The running joke about Hugh Jackman’s possible appearance – he’s never actually in the show, but with the Australian setting, he has to be somewhere – adds to the comedy.

If you’re looking for a funny and intriguing mystery to watch, check out The Residence. It’s a clever show that deserved to be renewed – it could have continued with new mysteries and characters, similar to Knives Out.
