Shawn Ryan, the creator of the popular Netflix thriller The Night Agent, has shared his plans for the show’s future, hinting at a complex, multi-season storyline.
The TV series The Night Agent is adapted from Matthew Quirk’s novel of the same title. Now in its third season, the show centers on Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso), an FBI agent who works in the White House basement monitoring an emergency phone line that never receives calls. That changes in season one when the phone finally rings, thrusting him into a perilous situation filled with government secrets and conspiracies.
Series creator Ryan Murphy recently spoke with Ash Crossan from ScreenRant about how he developed the character of Peter and the challenging circumstances he faces. He also shared that he’s already decided how The Night Agent will end and emphasized the importance of the show’s overall conclusion.
Ryan intentionally avoided giving away any plot details, so he was careful not to be specific about what he has planned for Peter or how the story of The Night Agent will conclude. He does have a general idea of where he wants to take the show in the future, but he’s open to changing the ending if he or the other writers come up with a better idea – as long as it feels consistent with everything that’s happened so far.
Ryan, reflecting on his work on the FX series The Shield, emphasized that it’s crucial to finish a show by staying consistent with its existing plot and characters. He felt it would be a mistake to ignore earlier storylines just to introduce something fresh. He believed that sticking to the original vision of The Shield is why the finale resonated so well with viewers.
Ultimately, the show’s creator emphasized that The Night Agent is fundamentally Peter’s story. His character development and the lessons he learns should be the central focus throughout the series.
It’s important to have a plan, but also be flexible enough to adapt it when you discover a better approach.
As someone who’s watched a lot of TV, I’ve seen plenty of finales, and I’ve also had a hand in crafting one I’m proud of – The Shield ran for seven seasons, and I think most fans felt we gave it a satisfying conclusion. For me, the biggest thing when wrapping up a show is staying true to everything you’ve already established. You can’t just introduce new ideas or ignore major plot points that happened earlier – it has to feel like a natural continuation of the story.
We’ve been focusing on Peter’s growth throughout the series. We’re exploring what he learns with each season and how he changes as a character. We have a clear idea of his overall journey and where his story will ultimately lead.
You can now watch all ten episodes of season 3 of The Night Agent on Netflix. As of today, Netflix hasn’t announced whether there will be a fourth season.
