While The Night Agent could be Netflix’s answer to the popular series Reacher, it’s fallen into the same trap of having weak characters. Reacher has been a huge success for Amazon Prime Video, and now other streaming services are trying to capture that same magic.
Netflix’s action thriller, The Night Agent, is one of the best recent shows to really deliver on its promise. Based on the novel by Matthew Quirk, it stars Gabriel Basso as Peter Sutherland, an FBI agent investigating a possible spy within the US government.
Rose Is Not Returning For The Night Agent Season 3

In the first season of the series, Sutherland’s character is assigned to protect Rose Larkin, a tech CEO whose family is being threatened. Similar to how the connection between Reacher and Roscoe added depth to season one of Reacher, the developing relationship between Rose and Peter in The Night Agent gives the plot real emotional weight.
As a big fan of the show, I was really disappointed with what happened to Rose in season two. While they didn’t completely ditch the idea that she and Peter were together, her part was way smaller. She ended up working at a new company, and Peter just sort of…moved on to other things. The season was still enjoyable, but a lot of us were bummed to see the show move away from the Peter and Rose storyline we’d all gotten so invested in.
Reacher Moved On From Roscoe After Season 1
Reacher faced a similar issue in the first season with Roscoe, played by Willa Fitzgerald. She was a popular character who helped make Reacher more relatable, but she didn’t return for the second season’s storyline.
The popular Netflix thriller made a disappointing choice when the season 2 finale of The Night Agent split up Rose and Peter. That decision now seems permanent, as the actor who played Buchanan won’t be back for season 3.
Jack Ryan Is The Blueprint For How To Fix This Problem
Luckily, both shows can overcome this challenge. Jack Ryan found a way to do it by not only retaining important characters, but also by bringing back a character’s love interest from the first season later on.
Like The Night Agent and Reacher, each season of Jack Ryan tells a complete story. This structure gives The Night Agent a clear path to bring back the character Rose after season 3, and helps it avoid the problems Reacher had with continuing storylines.
