Netflix’s New Western Series With Game Of Thrones Star Can Only Get Better After Becoming Global Hit

Netflix’s new Western series has become popular worldwide, and it has the potential to get even better if it’s renewed for a second season. Following the success of Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone and its related shows, Westerns are enjoying a resurgence, and it’s great to see studios capitalizing on this renewed interest.

Westerns are increasingly popular on streaming services, and we’ve seen a rise in Western movies lately. Netflix has recognized this trend and has started producing several Western series for its viewers. One new Western show on Netflix is particularly promising, and many are hoping for an even stronger second season.

The Abandons Is Netflix’s Latest Hit Western Series

Netflix has found success with its Western series. Popular titles include American Primeval, a gritty story of a cross-country journey, and Territory, an Australian series similar to Yellowstone that focuses on a powerful family. Most recently, in December 2025, Netflix released The Abandons.

The first season of this Netflix Western, consisting of seven episodes, premiered on December 4, 2025. What sets the show apart – and makes it a unique addition to the currently popular Western genre – is its focus on two families headed by women in the 1850s. One of these families is led by Fiona Nolan, portrayed by Lena Headey, known for her role in Game of Thrones, and is comprised of orphans.

Lena Headey’s character clashes with Constance Van Ness, played by Gillian Anderson, who leads a rich family involved in mining. The series, The Abandons, pits these two very different families against each other in a dispute over land – a classic Western storyline – as the powerful Van Ness family attempts to force Fiona’s group off their property.

The cast of The Abandons features Lucas Till, known for his role in MacGyver, Nick Robinson from Jurassic World, and Ryan Hurst of Sons of Anarchy.

Michiel Huisman (Game of Thrones), and more.

While the first season of The Abandons isn’t perfect, it offers a unique take on traditional Western themes and boasts a strong cast who bring genuine emotion to the series. However, it hasn’t been well-received by critics – it currently has a 30% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audience scores are also low, at 52%.

Despite its success, The Abandons still has potential for improvement. The show faced challenges during its first season because creator Kurt Sutter left before it finished, which resulted in inconsistent episode lengths and other problems. If the show has a consistent leader for season two, it could be even stronger. With a global audience already invested, The Abandons could really thrive with more stability behind the scenes.
