A recently released film on Netflix is receiving excellent reviews and is predicted to be a strong candidate for Oscars nominations, continuing Netflix’s success with awards season.
Netflix has become a major force during awards season, and 2025 is no different. The streaming service is hoping to win Oscars with big-budget films like A House of Dynamite and Frankenstein.
As the year ends, the streaming service is releasing its final potential award winners. Both A House of Dynamite and Frankenstein, as genre films, are proving popular with viewers and climbing the charts.
Netflix has released a highly praised drama that critics have been raving about since January. Its release is well-timed, as Academy Award voting is underway and the film is considered a strong contender for Best Picture at the 98th Academy Awards in 2026.
Train Dreams Is Now Streaming On Netflix As Awards Season Really Heats Up
The new drama Train Dreams, featuring Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones, is now available on Netflix as of November 21st. Clint Bentley directed the film, co-writing the screenplay with Greg Kwedar. It’s adapted from the book of the same name by Denis Johnson.
The film centers on Robert Grainier, a railroad worker and father, portrayed by Joel Edgerton, and his difficulties balancing his job with being away from his wife, Gladys (played by Naomi Jones), and their little girl.
The movie Train Dreams has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, scoring 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics especially loved its moving story, beautiful visuals, and the strong performance by Edgerton. Mae Abdulbaki, writing for Ebaster after the film’s debut at the Sundance Film Festival, described the performance as both “fantastic” and “captivating.”
At just an hour and 42 minutes long, Train Dreams is a quick and easy watch at home. It’s also a film to keep an eye on if you’re interested in potential nominees for the 2026 Oscars.
Many believe Train Dreams could be nominated for awards in several categories, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Cinematography. While Joel Edgerton might face tough competition for a Best Actor nomination this year, Sarah Jones is considered unlikely to receive a second consecutive Best Supporting Actress nomination.
The film also benefits from its history with the Academy Awards, as its screenwriter, Kwedar, was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay last year for Sing Sing. Although Sing Sing didn’t win, the fact that voters already know and appreciate his work could improve Train Dreams‘ chances of success.
The film Train Dreams is likely to be considered for several Academy Awards next year. It’s still uncertain how many nominations it will receive, or if it will win any awards, but watching it now on Netflix is a good way for awards enthusiasts to stay up-to-date as the awards season progresses.
