offers a lot of captivating shows, and is one of them. This dramatic series first aired in 2020, but its confusing plot and unresolved storylines frustrated many viewers, leading them to watch it despite disliking it – which ultimately impacted its reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
The latest season premiered on Netflix on December 17th, but it’s received the lowest ratings of any installment in the series on Rotten Tomatoes. While previous seasons had mixed reactions, this one started with a disappointing 56% score from critics. Audience ratings aren’t available yet.
Critics generally give Emily in Paris a slightly positive rating, with an overall approval score of 62% across its five seasons. However, viewers seem to like it even less, giving it a 50% approval rating.
Season 4 is the most popular with critics, earning a 68% rating. Season 3 is close behind at 67%, and Season 1 received 61%. Currently, Season 5 has the lowest rating at 56% based on nine reviews, while Season 2 isn’t far ahead with 58%, which has earned it a ‘rotten’ designation.
Now that the new season is out, the audience score is likely to change as more people share their thoughts. However, despite years of feedback about the show’s problems, the initial reaction suggests the creators haven’t addressed any of those concerns.
Okay, so I’m totally invested in Emily in Paris, but honestly, it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster. The show starts with Emily, a marketing girl from Chicago, moving to France to shake things up at her company’s Paris office. We’ve seen her navigate love, friendships, and all the awkwardness of being an American in Paris. But, and this is a big ‘but,’ the love life! She’s gone back and forth between Gabriel, Alfie, and now Marcello, and a lot of us fans are starting to think she hasn’t really grown at all through all this drama. It feels like she’s just repeating the same patterns, and it’s getting frustrating!
Season 5 began with Emily having just moved to Rome to open a new branch of Agence Grateau. She was still dating Marcello, who happened to be the son of one of her clients.
In a review for Slant Magazine, Michael Haigis criticized the show for being driven by commercialism, arguing that its focus on wealth undermines any potential for it to be genuinely comforting or even enjoyably over-the-top. He described it as essentially a five-hour advertisement for high-end fashion and the excesses of modern capitalism.
Katie Rosseinsky of The Independent described the new season as superficial and lacking substance, where characters don’t really grow and events don’t feel meaningful. She felt the plot often existed just to casually mention popular brands.
Emily in Paris Season 5 Continues to Be Binge-Worthy
Despite the low ratings, the latest season still has a dedicated following. Critics don’t consider the storyline award-worthy, but the show remains incredibly fun to watch, becoming a popular guilty pleasure.
Isabella Liistro from Loud and Clear Reviews enjoyed the fifth season of Emily in Paris, calling its focus on attractive people and locations still captivating, though she feels the storyline is becoming less engaging. Hannah J Davies of The Guardian highlighted the show’s easy watchability, describing it as a fun and festive binge-watch perfect for the holidays.
David Caballero at Collider suggests that if you’ve been following Emily’s story so far, you’ll likely enjoy her new story set in Rome.
Emily in Paris is streaming on Netflix.
