The streaming service recently shared data on its most popular shows from July and December 2025. The report also includes viewership numbers for two series that were unexpectedly canceled after only one season, leading to questions about the reasons for those cancellations.
Perhaps the most surprising cancellation is that of a promising military dramedy. The show received very positive reviews – a 90% score from both critics and viewers on Rotten Tomatoes – and was expected to be renewed for a second season. However, Netflix decided to cancel it, and some speculate this was because the show didn’t consistently rank as number one on the platform.
Despite its cancellation, the series Boots performed remarkably well on Netflix, attracting 30.7 million views between its release on October 9th and the end of 2025. This viewership actually exceeded that of several renewed shows, including the controversial fourth season of The Witcher (25.4 million views), The Diplomat (20.8 million views), and the second season of the comedy Nobody Wants This (30.4 million views). Boots also outperformed newer releases like Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black Season 2 Part 1 and Black Rabbit, starring Jason Bateman and Jude Law, which premiered a month prior.
The new report also highlights viewership for the series The Waterfront, which debuted on Netflix with a lot of buzz, being touted as similar to Ozark. It garnered 19.3 million views recently, adding to the 21 million it received in its first 11 days at the end of June, for a total of 40.3 million viewers. This strong performance makes its cancellation, like the cancellation of Boots, particularly surprising.
Why Did Netflix Cancel Popular Shows?

Netflix
It’s often difficult to understand Netflix’s decisions because they keep a lot of information private, like how well movies perform in terms of revenue and why certain shows aren’t continued.
It’s possible that Netflix decided not to renew Boots and The Waterfront because they were produced by Sony and Universal, respectively, and existing deals with those studios influenced the decision. Alternatively, Netflix might not have been satisfied with plans for future seasons or the overall performance of the shows – The Waterfront, for example, received a 68% approval rating from both critics and viewers – leading to their cancellation.

The show Boots gained attention after the Pentagon’s press secretary publicly criticized its LGBTQ+ storyline set in the military, calling it offensive. Despite this criticism not affecting reviews or how many people watched, the real reason for the show’s cancellation remains unclear, adding to the frustration many feel with Netflix’s often unexplained decisions to end series.
