Netflix’s 8-Part Sci-Fi Thriller Series Is One Of Its Best

Netflix has a fantastic sci-fi show from 2024 that didn’t get the attention it deserved. Luckily, sci-fi TV is currently very popular, with the Star Wars universe consistently releasing new shows. While fans are waiting for new Star Trek series, Star Wars continues to thrive on television.

Several exciting science fiction shows are on the way, including the new Blade Runner 2099 and a series based on S.A. Corey’s The Captive’s War. However, Netflix’s 3 Body Problem, which premiered in 2024, shows that even well-made, ambitious sci-fi doesn’t always find a large audience right away.

3 Body Problem Is One of Netflix’s Most Ambitious Sci-Fi Shows Yet

The Netflix series 3 Body Problem is inspired by Liu Cixin’s novels Remembrance of Earth’s Past. The title comes from a challenging problem in physics. The show follows a diverse group of people as they deal with the first contact between humans and aliens, an event that will change everything for our species.

Netflix’s new sci-fi series, 3 Body Problem, wasn’t an instant sensation like Black Mirror, but it was definitely one of the streaming service’s biggest and most complex sci-fi projects yet. Created by the team behind Game of Thrones, David Benioff and DB Weiss, the show centers around ‘The Oxford Five’ – a diverse group of scientists investigating strange occurrences.

The show began with a group called ‘The Oxford Five’ investigating strange deaths, but the story soon focused on Dr. Ye Wenjie, an astrophysicist. 3 Body Problem did a good job of bringing Liu Cixin’s complex novels to life without simplifying the plot.

3 Body Problem’s Ambition Is Admirable Despite The Show’s Issues

The Netflix sci-fi series isn’t perfect, and after finishing the first season of 3 Body Problem, viewers might have more questions than resolutions. Because the story covers so much ground, some characters don’t get the development they deserve. Plus, the show gets so caught up in explaining its central ideas that it sometimes prioritizes the ‘science’ part of ‘science fiction’ over the storytelling.

Honestly, despite a few small issues, I was really impressed with how this show approached the idea of first contact. It wasn’t just about fighting aliens, which is a refreshing change. Like the movie Arrival, 3 Body Problem really makes you think about what actually happens when we meet life from another world, and I think the show deserves a lot of credit for trying to tackle such a big, thoughtful idea.
