Many consider Netflix to have some of the best psychological thrillers available, and one particular show remains incredibly popular even years after its five-season run. For nearly a decade, Netflix has been a leader in television, consistently releasing a large number of new shows and movies with ever-improving production value.
Even though there are now more shows than ever and Netflix has plenty of money to produce high-quality content, one show from 2018 still stands out as the best in its category. Interestingly, this show nearly wasn’t picked up by Netflix at all.
What Is You About?
The show You, starring Penn Badgley, centers around Joe Goldberg, a dangerous and obsessive killer. It’s based on Caroline Kepnes’ popular novels, and while the first seasons closely follow the books, the series later develops its own unique storyline, diverging from the original source material.
Joe is a charming and enthusiastic person with a love for books and a knack for understanding others. However, when he becomes infatuated with someone, his feelings quickly turn dangerous. He’s willing to do anything – no matter how extreme – to build what he believes is an ideal life, and his obsession spirals into something deeply unsettling.
You Is Aging Well
As a huge fan of thrillers, I was completely hooked by ‘You’, but it’s definitely a dark and intense ride. The show centers around a seriously troubled guy, and what’s fascinating – and unsettling – is how it sometimes tries to make you root for him. Honestly, it walks a fine line – the things he does are so problematic that it could easily feel exploitative or in bad taste. But thankfully, the writers manage to pull it off; the overall story arc makes it clear that Joe isn’t a hero, and the ending really drives that point home. It’s a clever way to explore those dangerous ideas without glorifying them.
Many TV shows stumble when they reach their later seasons, but You manages to avoid that pitfall. The final season cleverly reveals Joe’s true nature and makes the show’s message very clear, leading to a satisfying conclusion. Plus, each season remains captivating and consistently engaging throughout the series.
Netflix Was Right To Save You From Cancellation
Surprisingly, You wasn’t originally intended for Netflix. Showtime first bought the rights and even approved a second season before the first one aired. However, after the premiere didn’t gain much traction, Showtime canceled their deal, and the show nearly ended before it really began.
Fortunately, Netflix saw the potential in the story and bought the rights, even agreeing to future seasons in advance. This helped the series become a major success for the streaming service. Now, five seasons in, You is still one of Netflix’s biggest hits, and it continues to attract both longtime fans and new viewers.
