Netflix’s 3 Body Problem: The Perfect Expanse Replacement?

Many sci-fi fans still miss The Expanse, a show that really stood out in the genre. Luckily, Netflix has a new series that seems to be capturing the same magic and filling that gap.

Many compare The Expanse to Game of Thrones in terms of its complexity, and the first episode can feel a bit dense due to all the detailed world-building. But once you get used to the intricate politics, realistic setting, and epic scope, The Expanse becomes a truly captivating space opera that consistently keeps you engaged.

Look, as a huge sci-fi fan, let me tell you, nothing’s really filled the void left by The Expanse – that show was just incredible for all six seasons. But there’s one Netflix adaptation of a book series that’s been helping me cope with its loss, and it’s surprisingly good!

Netflix’s 3 Body Problem Is The Perfect Show For The Expanse’s Fans

Like The Expanse, 3 Body Problem delivers a realistic and scientifically grounded sci-fi experience. It quickly introduces complex physics concepts and then develops into a vast, multi-generational story.

Both The Expanse and 3 Body Problem feature science as a central element, not just a backdrop. The Expanse explores realistic scientific details like how things move in space, the strain of acceleration, and the effects of low gravity on the human body. 3 Body Problem, on the other hand, delves into more abstract concepts like theoretical physics and nanotechnology, alongside the complex ‘Three-Body Problem’ it’s named after.

Similar to how The Expanse depicts the struggles between Earth, Mars, and the Belt, 3 Body Problem shows conflict among different groups of people when faced with a threat from aliens. Both stories make these political and religious tensions feel very realistic and impactful.

If you were captivated by the immense and frightening dangers of the Protomolecule in The Expanse, you’ll likely be equally thrilled by the alien threat in 3 Body Problem – the San-Ti (also known as Trisolarans).

Since 3 Body Problem has a lot in common with what people enjoyed about The Expanse, it’s reasonable to think of it as a replacement now that The Expanse is finished.

3 Body Problem Will Only Get Better In Seasons 2 & 3

Created by the team behind Game of Thrones (Benioff and Weiss) and Alexander Woo, 3 Body Problem‘s first season only begins to explore the vast story of its source material. Similar to the first season of The Expanse, it mainly sets the stage for the more thrilling events to come.

Having proven their skill at adapting novels with Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss seem poised to make 3 Body Problem even better with each new season.

Netflix has announced that 3 Body Problem is planned to have three seasons, making it a shorter show overall than The Expanse. However, it appears to be a great choice for viewers who enjoyed The Expanse on Prime Video.
