Netflix is planning a remake of a highly-rated mystery thriller film only four years after it first came out. The streaming service already offers a variety of mystery and thriller movies, including the new Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery and the intense The Killer directed by David Fincher.
Netflix is planning an American remake of the 2021 French mystery thriller, Black Box, according to Deadline. They’ve partnered with director Tim Fehlbaum (September 5) to create the new version, shortly after securing the rights to remake the film in English.
Black Box centers around Mathieu Vasseur, an NTSB investigator who analyzes flight recorder data. He’s tasked with figuring out what caused the crash of Atrian 800, a flight where everyone perished. As he listens to the recordings, he uncovers clues that point to a larger conspiracy behind the disaster. The film has been critically acclaimed, earning a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Yann Gozlan directed the first film, which only played in a few US theaters. Netflix made a smart choice in hiring Fehlbaum to direct their remake, as he’s known for creating believable thrillers. He previously directed September 5, a critically acclaimed film based on the true story of the ABC sports team’s coverage of the 1972 Munich massacre.
With his recent film receiving a Golden Globe nomination for Best Drama, Fehlbaum seems like a great director for Black Box. The movie is being produced by Andrew Mittman and Kai Dolbashian from 1.21, the company behind Netflix’s Wednesday and the horror film Together, which starred Dave Franco and Alison Brie.
While it’s still unclear exactly how Netflix’s remake of Black Box will differ from the original, it’s expected to have a similar overall storyline. However, some changes are likely, mainly because the new movie probably won’t be set in France like the first one was.
Despite this, the new version highlights Netflix’s expanding worldwide presence and its commitment to creating content for diverse viewers. Since director Fehlbaum has already demonstrated his talent with September 5, choosing him to lead the remake appears to be a smart move as the project gets underway.
