The popular sci-fi film District 9, produced by Peter Jackson, will no longer be available on Netflix next month. The movie tells the story of aliens who crash-land on Earth and are forced to live in segregated camps.
District 9 is leaving Netflix next month
Starting April 1, 2026, the movie District 9 will no longer be available on Netflix, according to What’s on Netflix.
The movie takes place on a different version of Earth where an alien spacecraft lands and stays above Johannesburg, South Africa. When authorities investigate, they find the aliens are weak and insect-like. Concerned for human safety, the government isolates them in a special zone known as District 9.
Years later, the government, working with the MNU corporation, intends to move the aliens to an area outside the city. But when MNU employee Wikus van de Merwe is unexpectedly exposed to alien fluid, he starts changing into one of them. As the authorities begin to pursue him, Wikus escapes to District 9.
Neill Blomkamp’s first full-length movie, District 9, grew out of his 2005 short film, Alive in Joburg. He co-wrote the screenplay with his wife, Terri Tatchell.
Peter Jackson, who co-produced the film, originally hoped to create a movie based on the Xbox game Halo. When Guillermo del Toro left the project, Jackson asked director Blomkamp to take over. However, the movie was eventually cancelled, leading Jackson to instead adapt Blomkamp’s short film, as reported by VICE.
The film first premiered at the 2009 San Diego Comic-Con on July 23rd, and then opened in the United States on August 14, 2009. It was a big hit with both critics and audiences. Despite a production budget of around $30 million, the movie grossed over $210.8 million worldwide (according to Box Office Mojo).
The movie District 9 received positive reviews, with a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and an 82% audience score. It was also recognized by the Academy Awards in 2010, receiving four nominations, including Best Picture.
