The popular series Stranger Things made a comeback in 2026 with fresh episodes, kicking off a surprising new chapter for Steve Harrington. Many of the actors who began the show as children are now taking on leading roles in other big projects and franchises, as Stranger Things has concluded.
Sadie Sink, known for Stranger Things, is heading to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a role in July’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The success of Stranger Things came from its smart mix of up-and-coming young actors alongside more established and experienced performers, which helped build a realistic and complex world with relatable characters.
Although characters like Millie Bobby Brown’s Eleven and Finn Wolfhard’s Mike were consistently popular throughout the series, Joe Keery’s Steve Harrington ultimately became the show’s biggest fan favorite. Initially presented as a complex character in the first season, Steve won over audiences with his charm and impressive growth, becoming a central figure in Stranger Things.
Season 1 of Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, a new animated spinoff from Netflix, brought back familiar faces like Steve with a fresh voice cast. The ten-episode series, released on April 23rd, introduced new monsters, unexpected character combinations, and a key new character, signaling a new beginning for Steve’s story.
Steve Harrington’s Role Is Very Different In Stranger Things: Tales From ’85
The creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, originally planned to kill off the character Steve. However, Joe Keery’s engaging performance convinced them to change their minds, and Steve quickly became a more significant character with each season. Viewers watched him evolve into a protector for the younger kids, a close friend to Robin, and a potential love interest for Nancy. While Steve was already a major character in the live-action Stranger Things series, the new comic book, Tales from ’85, dramatically expands his role.
Steve Harrington has become a fan favorite on Netflix’s Stranger Things, and his presence is definitely felt throughout the series. However, in the spin-off Stranger Things: Tales from ’85, Steve is missing for the first three episodes. He finally reappears in episode 4, “Chapter Four: The Confession,” where he joins forces with Dustin, giving fans plenty of the enjoyable interactions they love as they battle creatures from the Upside Down. He also makes a quick appearance at the beginning of episode 5 at Hopper’s cabin.
Steve’s part in the first season of Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 is limited. Unlike the original series where he was a key character, this Stranger Things spin-off keeps him on the sidelines. The animated series rightly focuses on the younger characters, matching its style and more lighthearted feel. However, fans of Steve Harrington might find this a bit disappointing, even though Jeremy Jordan delivers a good performance as him.
Netflix’s New Stranger Things Series Can Still Make Up For Steve’s Small Role In 2026
Steve had a minor part in the first season of the Stranger Things spinoff, but he’s likely to return to his more prominent role before the end of the year. With the young cast now firmly established – including the new character Nikki Baxter – and plans for the franchise to continue in 2026, characters like Steve, Nancy, Hopper, Joyce, and Jonathan could have bigger storylines, similar to what fans saw in the original live-action series.
The second season of Stranger Things: Tales from ’85 is coming out this fall, which is a quick release for the animated series. If Steve has a bigger role in the new season, appearing in several episodes, it could make up for his limited appearance in season one. Since the animated show has the potential to run for a while, fans will likely appreciate as much of Steve as possible.
