After two decades of being considered in Hollywood, a movie based on the graphic novel Torso – created by acclaimed comic book writers Brian Michael Bendis (known for Spider-Man) and Marc Andreyko (known for Batman) – is finally being made.
Netflix is making a movie based on the true-crime story behind the graphic novel Torso, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The novel details the unsolved case of the Cleveland Torso Murderer from the 1930s, and the comic series features artwork by Bendis.
Although a director hasn’t been officially announced, the film is already assembling a large production crew. Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment is working again with Zach Cregger, who directed Weapons, through his production company, Subconscious. Joining them are Alex Hedlund (Chucky) and Nick Antosca (Hannibal) from Eat the Cat, the studio known for successful projects like Candy and A Friend of the Family. David Bendis and Andreyko will serve as executive producers.
The graphic novel series Torso caught Hollywood’s attention in the early 2000s. Originally, David Fincher, the director of Zodiac, was going to direct a movie adaptation for Paramount, with Matt Damon slated to star and a script written by Ehren Kruger (Top Gun: Maverick). Todd McFarlane, the creator of Spawn, was also involved as a producer. Unfortunately, Paramount canceled the project at the last moment due to budget concerns, and the film never got made.
Torso is a six-part true crime comic book series from Image Comics. It’s based on the real-life Cleveland Torso Murderer case and follows Eliot Ness, a famous law enforcement officer, and his team as they hunt the serial killer. Writer Brian Bendis, who grew up in Cleveland, created the series as a tribute to his hometown.
The series received widespread critical praise, even winning an Eisner Award in 1999 for showcasing deserving talent. It was also nominated for a major horror award and three International Eagle Awards. Importantly, ‘Torso’ was the project that launched Brian Bendis’s career, attracting the attention of Marvel Comics, who then hired him to write popular runs of Spider-Man, Daredevil, and Fantastic Four.
There is currently no confirmed release date for Netflix’s Torso adaptation.
