The new crime series, Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole, is already proving popular with viewers. It’s quickly climbing the streaming charts just days after its release.
According to FlixPatrol, the TV series Detective Hole has quickly become popular on Netflix in the United States, reaching the No. 6 spot on the top 10 list. It premiered on March 26th, and all nine episodes are now available, making it a great choice for a weekend binge and helping it gain traction with viewers. The show’s streaming success began immediately after its release.
Jo Nesbø Also Wrote the Netflix Adaptation
This TV series is adapted from the Harry Hole novels by Norwegian author Jo Nesbø, focusing on the fifth book, The Devil’s Star. Tobias Santelmann, known for The Last Kingdom, plays the lead role of Harry Hole. The cast also includes Joel Kinnaman (Suicide Squad), Pia Tjelta (Don’t Call Me Mama), Peter Stormare (Until Dawn), and Anders Baasmo Christiansen (Dag). Jo Nesbø wrote the series, and Øystein Karlsen and Anna Zackrisson directed it.
Detective Hole centers around Harry Hole, a flawed detective in Oslo, Norway. Following a personal loss, he tries to get his life back on track, but is soon pulled into a disturbing case involving ritualistic murders. As he investigates, he battles his own personal struggles and uncovers corruption within the police department. The novel is a gripping and atmospheric noir thriller.
Jo Nesbø’s novels have been adapted for film and television before. His 2008 book, Headhunters, became a successful movie in 2011, directed by Morten Tyldum. However, Nesbø took a much more active role with Detective Hole, serving as showrunner for the Netflix series. He spent three years developing the show and recently discussed how different it was to be so involved in the adaptation process.
Jo Nesbø Was Heavily Involved in the Adaptation
He explained that writing a novel gives an author complete control, while writing a script means relinquishing a lot to others’ interpretations. It can be difficult to give up that control, but he’s happy to see his work adapted in different ways. He believes in trusting directors he respects and giving them the freedom to make their own choices, which is what he did with Headhunters and The Snowman. He simply let the directors lead the process.
When asked about Harry Hole’s appeal, the author admitted he wasn’t sure why readers connected with the character. He described Hole as a classic, though well-developed, ‘hard-thinking, romantic cynic’ and skilled detective. He intentionally leans into familiar detective tropes because he enjoys the genre, and since the character is successful, he doesn’t feel the need to overanalyze its popularity.
Detective Hole is streaming on Netflix.
