Netflix Revives Assassin’s Creed with New TV Series

Just because a movie or TV show doesn’t live up to the source material doesn’t mean the story is ruined forever. Sometimes, a reboot can save a struggling franchise. For example, the 1990s Judge Dredd movie starring Sylvester Stallone wasn’t well-received, but Karl Urban’s Dredd was much closer to the violent and gritty feel of the original comics. Fans of Stephen King are hoping the upcoming Dark Tower TV series from Mike Flanagan will be a better adaptation than the poorly received film.

As a huge movie and TV fan, I’ve been watching Netflix’s moves with their original stories and adaptations pretty closely. It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster, honestly. The Witcher really missed the mark for me – it just didn’t feel true to the books and games. But then Wednesday came along and totally nailed it! It pleased longtime Addams Family fans like me while also bringing in a whole new audience. Castlevania was a surprise too – they took the source material and built something completely new and amazing. Of course, they’ve had success with big names like Marvel and The Lincoln Lawyer, but they’ve also created their own hits like KPop Demon Hunters and, let’s be real, Stranger Things is a phenomenon. It’s clear they’re figuring out what works when it comes to building franchises.

The previous live-action Assassin’s Creed movie was a major failure. Now, Netflix is trying again with a new TV series, hoping to create something more like the gritty and well-received Dredd film.

The 2016 Assassin’s Creed Movie Was A Critical & Commercial Disappointment

Michael Fassbender and director Justin Kurzel received widespread critical acclaim in 2015 for their film adaptation of Macbeth. Despite this success giving them a lot of creative freedom, they chose to make a big-budget movie based on the Assassin’s Creed video game series.

The Assassin’s Creed movie shares the same imaginative world and time-traveling technology as the video games, but it features an original story. Plans were made for a series of films, and a sequel was even in development. However, after receiving negative reviews and failing to connect with viewers, the sequel was quickly scrapped.

While Assassin’s Creed earned back its production costs at the box office, it wasn’t financially successful. Critics widely disliked the film, criticizing its uninspired action sequences filled with special effects, confusing storyline, and the fact that Michael Fassbender’s acting skills weren’t used to their full potential. Though it’s a step above many other video game adaptations in terms of quality and performance, the bar for those films is quite low.

Netflix Is Turning Assassin’s Creed Into A TV Series

After the Assassin’s Creed movie failed to succeed in cinemas almost ten years ago, Netflix is trying the franchise again with a new TV series. Recently, TV shows based on video games have been much more successful than movie adaptations. Shows like Arcane, Fallout, and The Last of Us have become some of the most popular and well-received shows in recent years – and Arcane was even a Netflix original, giving fans a reason to be optimistic about this new series.

Netflix is planning a new series based on Assassin’s Creed, with production expected to begin in Italy around 2026. The series boasts a strong creative team, including co-creators and showrunners Roberto Patino (from DMZ) and David Wiener, as well as director Johan Renck, known for his work on Chernobyl. Actors Toby Wallace (from Babyteeth) and Tanzyn Crawford (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms) will play leading roles.

The movie version of Assassin’s Creed didn’t fully delve into the story or give the characters enough depth. However, the new Netflix series has the opportunity to explore the rich backstory and create more compelling characters. While previous attempts to adapt Assassin’s Creed for the screen haven’t been successful, this TV show could be the one that finally gets it right.
