Netflix Restricts Access to Matt Damon’s Sci-Fi Movie Elysium

The sci-fi movie Elysium is now streaming on Netflix, but there’s a limitation. If you subscribe to the ad-free plan, you’ll need to upgrade to a higher tier to watch it.

This month, Netflix removed around 140 movies and shows from its streaming service. The main reason appears to be licensing agreements – Netflix can’t show certain content with ads and still make money. Although Netflix has a deal with Sony for new releases, some Sony titles, like the film Elysium, aren’t available on the ad-supported plan. Viewers who want to avoid ads need to subscribe to the Standard or Premium plans, which are more expensive.

Matt Damon Plays a Different Kind of Role in Elysium

Neill Blomkamp wrote and directed the film Elysium. It takes place in the future, where the rich live on a beautiful space station called Elysium, while the rest of humanity struggles to survive on a damaged Earth. The film follows Max Da Costa, played by Matt Damon, who is dying from radiation exposure. His only hope is to reach Elysium and use its advanced technology to save his life, leading him on a perilous journey to the space station.

Damon is part of a talented cast in this science fiction film. He’s joined by well-known actors including Jodie Foster (from True Detective: Night Country), Sharlto Copley (The Witcher), Alice Braga (I Am Legend), Diego Luna (Andor), Wagner Moura (Narcos), William Fichtner (The Dark Knight), Jose Pablo Cantillo (The Walking Dead), Emma Tremblay (Supergirl), and Faran Tahir (Star Trek).

Elysium Is Considered to Be Underrated

Despite earning over $286 million globally, the film Elysium didn’t meet the studio’s financial goals. With a production budget of $115 million and significant marketing costs, its actual profit was reportedly under $20 million. Critics were also divided, giving the film a 64% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though it maintains a dedicated fanbase. Director Neill Blomkamp has stated he’s pleased with the final result.

When Elysium came out, I felt like I’d finally made the movie I’d always envisioned. Looking back, even if I live a long life and make several more films, I think it will always be a project I’m incredibly proud of – possibly the most ambitious and expensive one I’ll ever do.
