The popular adventure show Black Sails is leaving soon. All four seasons are currently available to stream, but you don’t have much time left to watch it!
As of April 17, 2026, Black Sails will no longer be available on Netflix. The show first aired on Starz for four seasons, from 2014 to 2017. It was well-received, earning an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and an 84% audience score. The second season was particularly popular, and the show was frequently nominated for Emmys for its impressive visual effects and sound editing.
Black Sails Is Sailing Away From Netflix
Created by Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine, this series is a prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel, Treasure Island. Set in the 18th century during the height of Caribbean piracy, primarily on New Providence Island, the story follows the exploits of pirates. It centers on the notorious Captain Flint, played by Toby Stephens (known from Die Another Day), and a young Long John Silver, portrayed by Luke Arnold (of Home and Away).
The show featured a talented cast including Hannah New, known for her role in Bridgerton; Jessica Parker Kennedy from The Secret Circle; Tom Hopper, who starred in The Umbrella Academy; Zach McGowan of Terminator Salvation; Toby Schmitz, recognizable from The Artful Dodger; Clara Paget, who appeared in Fast & Furious 6; and Harriet Walter, famous for her work in Succession.
Black Sails Reached Its Natural Conclusion After 4 Seasons
Before the fourth season of Black Sails aired, it was revealed that the show wouldn’t be renewed for a fifth season. Starz didn’t cancel the series; instead, the creators felt they had told the complete story they intended. Though they briefly considered potential storylines for a fifth season, they ultimately didn’t find a direction that felt necessary to pursue.
As a huge fan of the show, I was really sad to hear it was ending in 2016. The creator, Steinberg, explained they had incredible creative freedom over the past four years, which is pretty special for TV. It wasn’t an easy choice, but they felt like they’d told the story as well as possible and found a great way to lead into the world of Treasure Island. It sounds like they wanted to end on a high note and set things up perfectly for what comes next.
According to Starz managing editor Carmi Zlotnik, the team led by Jon Steinberg and Robert Levine, along with a fantastic cast, has created an amazing adaptation of the classic pirate story. The final season will conclude the series as originally planned, bringing the story to Treasure Island. Starz is incredibly proud of this unique series.
Black Sails is streaming on Netflix until Apr. 17, 2026.
