The Golden Globe nominations are in, and most of them were pretty much what I expected. Netflix did well, scoring three Best Motion Picture nominations: Frankenstein in the drama category, Nouvelle Vague for comedy or musical, and KPop Demon Hunters as an animated film. While those three films definitely deserve recognition, I was sad to see that Train Dreams, one of my top picks for the year, wasn’t nominated.

Train Dreams Is A Beautiful Movie
The film Train Dreams is a slow-paced and thoughtful story starring Joel Edgerton as Robert Grainier, an Idaho logger whose quiet life is disrupted by loss in the late 1800s and early 1900s. While it certainly deals with grief, it’s more about prompting viewers to consider the bigger questions of life and what we leave behind.
It might not sound exciting, but trust me, this film is captivating. It’s easily one of the most memorable movies I’ve seen this year, and I’m still pondering its themes weeks later. I haven’t had a chance to watch it again yet, but I definitely plan to. While I enjoy a good action film, I especially appreciate movies that are both thoughtful and philosophical, like Train Dreams.

It’s Not All Bad News
Although Train Dreams wasn’t nominated for Best Picture at The Globes, Joel Edgerton rightfully received a Best Actor nomination for his performance in a drama. While the entire cast – including Felicity Jones, Kerry Condon, and William H. Macy – is excellent, Edgerton truly carries the film. Robert, his character, appears in nearly every scene – I might even check on my next viewing to confirm if he’s in all of them – and spends a lot of time on screen alone.
I’m optimistic that Train Dreams will receive Oscar nominations when they’re announced next month. The film is technically excellent, boasting beautiful visuals and sound. I anticipate it will be recognized in those areas, as the Golden Globes don’t have those specific categories. Regardless, I’m confident Train Dreams – available on Netflix – will be among my top five films of 2025.
