Netflix & Crunchyroll’s ‘Dandadan’ is the Best Sci-Fi Show in Years

While shows like Stranger Things, Black Mirror, and Love, Death + Robots are popular, Netflix quietly released one of the best sci-fi series of recent years. Debuting in 2024, it’s already gaining recognition as a potential classic. With a fantastic second season already out, and more seasons planned, plus a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s no surprise this show is a hit.

This funny and unique series, based on a manga by Yukinobu Tatsu, mixes spooky paranormal happenings with over-the-top science fiction. It centers around two high school students, Momo and Okarun, who have very different beliefs – one loves UFOs, while the other believes in ghosts. When they both realize they might be right, things get really strange, especially when a mischievous ancient spirit named Turbo Granny steals Okarun’s… well, let’s just say his most prized possession!

Get ready for something truly unique! Dandadan is an incredibly strange and original series now available on Netflix and Crunchyroll. What’s great is that you won’t be waiting long between seasons – after the first release in Fall 2024, new episodes arrived after just nine months. Season 3 is coming in early 2027, and because the studio, Science SARU, is clearly dedicated to the show, fans can expect new content regularly.

‘Dandadan’ is Action-Packed and Surprisingly Emotional

You might not expect a show about two teens searching for stolen testicles to be emotionally moving, but the first season of Dandadan surprisingly did just that for many viewers. Specifically, when the character Acrobatic Silky appears and a flashback begins, be prepared to cry.

Throughout the series, strong emotions remain central to the story. While it features incredible action sequences with beautiful animation from Science SARU, Dandadan is fundamentally about two teens discovering where they fit in and falling for each other. Even the strangest characters – like a boxing shrimp from outer space – are surprisingly complex and well-developed, going beyond simple comedic roles.
