Netflix’s live-action Assassin’s Creed series is now in production. Filming began on Friday in Rome, Italy, and the story takes place in 64 AD, right in the heart of the Roman Empire.
Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed series is the newest effort to bring Ubisoft’s incredibly popular video game franchise – which has sold over 230 million copies – to the screen. Previously, a movie starring Michael Fassbender was made by 20th Century Fox in 2016. While intended to kick off a film series, those plans were scrapped after the movie received poor reviews and didn’t do well in theaters.
What Is Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed Series About?
The Assassin’s Creed video games center around a hidden war between the Assassins and the Knights Templar, groups who both want a better world but disagree on how to achieve it – one believes in freedom, the other in control. Netflix has now announced when and where its Assassin’s Creed series will take place, and shared a brief summary of the show’s plot.
The Assassin’s Creed series is a fast-paced, action-packed story about a hidden conflict between two groups: one that wants to control humanity’s future, and another that fights to protect people’s freedom. The games take place during important moments in history, and follow characters as they struggle to decide the fate of humankind.
Toby Wallace, Lola Petticrew, Zachary Hart, Laura Marcus, Tanzyn Crawford, Claes Bang, and Nabhaan Rizwan star in the Netflix series Assassin’s Creed.
I’m really excited about the upcoming Assassin’s Creed series on Netflix! They just announced some new cast members, and I’m thrilled to see Sandra Guldberg-Kampp (known from Foundation and The Rain), Youssef Kerkour (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms), Mirren Mack (Hedda), and Louis McCartney (Stranger Things: The First Shadow) are all joining the show. It’s shaping up to be amazing!
Can Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed Succeed Where the Movie Failed?
Netflix is betting that an Assassin’s Creed series will succeed where Fox’s movie adaptations failed. They’ve hired Emmy-nominated writers Roberto Patino (known for DMZ, Westworld, and Sons of Anarchy) and David Wiener (Halo, Homecoming, The Killing) to develop the show and lead it as showrunners and executive producers.
I’ve been a huge Assassin’s Creed fan ever since the first game came out in 2007, and working on this show has only deepened that love. Honestly, every day we’re reminded of just how much potential the Assassin’s Creed universe has. It’s easy to get caught up in the amazing scale, the action, and the parkour, but at its heart, it’s a story about what it means to be human – people trying to find their place in the world, grappling with who they are, and what they believe. It’s about the things that drive us – power, desire, revenge – and the messy, complicated ways we pursue them.
Ultimately, this show celebrates the importance of people connecting with each other, regardless of background or time period. It also explores what happens when those bonds are lost. We’re incredibly excited to be working with the talented teams at Ubisoft and Netflix to create a truly special experience for viewers worldwide.
Netflix’s Assassin’s Creed does not currently have a release date.
