Netflix is launching a new horror series inspired by a famous Gothic novel, continuing its practice of turning classic books into shows. They’ve had success with adaptations like The Fall of the House of Usher, created by Mike Flanagan before he moved to Prime Video. Given the positive reception to Usher, Netflix is now following a similar approach with The Grays, a fresh take on Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray.
Announced earlier this year, the new series is being written by Katie Rose Rogers, known for her work on shows like Supergirl and Fellow Travelers. While details are scarce, The Grays will be set in the present day and center on the lives of siblings Basil and Dorian Gray, with a focus on the world of beauty. Considering the source material’s dark themes, this series could be a great addition to Netflix’s growing collection of horror content, matching the quality of their recent film adaptations like Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein.
As a movie buff, I’m really hyped for this new adaptation of The Picture of Dorian Gray. What strikes me is how incredibly relevant the story feels today. The book tackles themes like social class, being obsessed with how you look, and the pressure to present a perfect image to the world – and honestly, it feels more relevant now than ever. Think about social media – it’s all about crafting a specific image and constantly comparing yourself to everyone else’s highlight reels. It’s like the book was predicting our current reality!
‘The Grays’ Has the Makings of a New Netflix Hit

Netflix
Netflix has found success adapting books into limited series, like The Haunting of Hill House, created by Mike Flanagan and based on Shirley Jackson’s 1959 novel. While Flanagan isn’t working on the new series The Grays, Netflix seems to be aiming for a similar feel to his previous shows. Currently, the director of The Life of Chuck is busy adapting Stephen King stories for Amazon Prime Video and is also directing the upcoming Exorcist movie starring Scarlett Johansson.
We don’t yet know who will star in or when production will begin on The Grays. Netflix hasn’t released any official information about the series, making it difficult to predict a release date. Despite the lack of details, the show has the potential to be Netflix’s next popular horror series, offering something new to a lineup that’s recently focused on films like Frankenstein.
