I have to say, I was really surprised by how much critics liked that video game movie when it first came out! It didn’t exactly set the box office on fire, but it’s clearly finding a fanbase now that people are discovering it through streaming. It’s great to see!
The horror film Exit 8 came out in U.S. cinemas in April, but didn’t perform strongly, earning under $4 million. It was much more popular in Japan. As of July 17th, it’s available to stream on Shudder and AMC+. According to FlixPatrol, Exit 8 quickly became the second most popular title on AMC+, trailing only The Vampire Lestat. It’s also the second most-watched film on Shudder.
The Exit 8 Gets Reimagined as a Feature Film
I just finished watching a really intriguing film based on the game The Exit 8, and it’s stuck with me. Directed by Genki Kawamura, who also co-wrote the script, it centers around a man – played brilliantly by Kazanuri Ninomiya – who’s stuck in a never-ending loop in a subway. It’s a clever premise: he has to pay super close attention to his surroundings because the only way out is to spot tiny changes each time he goes through the loop. See something off? Turn around! Everything normal? Keep going. Along the way, he meets some pretty strange people, and it’s a total mind-bender trying to figure out what’s going on.
Alongside Ninomiya in the main role, Exit 8 features Yamato Kochi, Naru Asanuma, Kotone Hanase, and Nana Komatsu. Kenji Yamada, Akito Yamamoto, and Taichi Ito produced the film.
Exit 8 Holds a Rotten Tomatoes Record
The movie Exit 8 is receiving excellent reviews, boasting a 92% approval rating and an 86% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics at Rotten Tomatoes confirm this makes it the highest-rated film ever adapted from a video game. Josh Serba of Decider praised the film, stating it “deserves the same recognition as Backrooms.” The movie is being celebrated for faithfully adapting its source material while still bringing something new to the cinematic experience.
