In the second episode of its third season, NCIS: Sydney has established Bluebird Gleeson (Mavournee Hazel) as its standout character. This Australian-based NCIS spinoff, which began in 2023, is now the second-longest-running series in the franchise, following NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: New Orleans. The original NCIS is currently airing its 23rd season.
The third season of NCIS: Sydney began last week with Michelle Mackey’s (Olivia Swann) team noticeably short one member. The season premiere revealed their forensic scientist had resigned, explaining their departure in a video message. However, Doc (William McInnes) suspects there’s more to the story. Previously, the team had asked Rosie to look into a private issue, and that investigation led them to clues about Blue’s sudden exit in the episode “True Blue.”
Bluebird Gleeson’s Traumatic NCIS: Sydney Season 3 Story Explained
Okay, so I was really glad to see Blue back in “True Blue” – she was missing from the first episode, and I was wondering what happened! It all makes sense now, tying back to that crazy cliffhanger at the end of NCIS: Sydney Season 2. Remember that woman showing up at Bluebird’s place? Totally out of the blue! It definitely seemed connected to why Gleeson was absent and why Blue suddenly resigned, and this episode finally started to explore that mystery. It was a smart move to bring that storyline back into play.
When we see Bluebird again, she’s living in a large property in the Blue Mountains. It turns out Aspira, the woman who visited her apartment, was the reason Gleeson left. Aspira claimed she needed to go back to her community to help her brother. Blue agrees to return home to see her twin brother, Eli (Jacob Collins-Levy), but he insists everything is alright when they meet. However, Blue quickly realizes there’s a real threat she needs to uncover.
Gleeson speaks with a young girl who thinks of ‘Blue’ as her queen and finds out that Aspira has manipulated the entire farming town into believing a false prophecy about ascending to the stars together. At the same time, the team figures out the remains found in Blue’s apartment are her father’s and travels to the Bilpin Collective to check on their teammate. There, they discover poison, realizing Aspira is actually planning a mass suicide.
Bluebird manages to stall long enough for her team to get back to the commune and arrest Aspira, who was planning to harm everyone and take over the land. During this, Bluebird experiences a deeply upsetting event when her brother is almost killed. This leads her to reconnect with her grandmother and learn the truth about what happened to her father, while also revealing a troubling history for the team’s scientist. The story also highlights how much responsibility Hazel carries in this new series.
Blue’s Rich Backstory Quietly Confirms That She’s The Best Character
Bluebird’s episode is a welcome addition to the NCIS: Sydney series. It’s the first time the show has thoroughly explored a character’s history, showing key moments from Blue’s life and adding depth to the overall story. While viewers knew a little about the characters before, this episode uses flashbacks to reveal Blue’s past in a way that goes beyond simple background details.
The NCIS franchise, including its spin-offs, carefully uses flashbacks to develop its key characters. This technique began in Season 3 of the original NCIS with a two-part finale that showed the traumatic experiences of Leroy Jethro Gibbs through flashbacks he had while in a coma. The character of Blue is also popular with viewers, and NCIS: Sydney‘s focus on her complex personality suggests they recognize she’s becoming a new fan favorite within the NCIS universe.
Will Blue Return To Michelle Mackey’s Team In NCIS: Sydney Season 3?
Okay, so the big mystery about Bluebird’s dad is finally wrapped up, which is great. But honestly, I’m still on the edge of my seat wondering if we’ll see Gleeson back with the AFP/NCIS: Sydney team in Season 3. She’s free of Aspira and thankfully reunited with her brother, but she hasn’t said one way or the other if she wants to rejoin. And things got even more complicated – while Mackey and JD were digging into what happened to her, they found out some stuff about Bluebird that’s made them question whether they can even trust her back on the team. It’s a total cliffhanger!
The biggest surprise in the recent developments is the discovery that Blue, whose real name is Faith Mullins, has a criminal record. Even though she was only trying to identify what she thought were her father’s remains using a university scanner, her past should have prevented her from being accepted into the agency after an AFP background check. It turns out Blue faked all of her official identification and documents, creating a complex situation that Mackey and JD struggle to resolve in the final episode, “True Blue.”
Blue committed a serious offense against the AFP, and Mackey realizing this means Gleeson shouldn’t have been hired in the first place. As Michelle points out at the end of Episode 2, she and JD are the only ones who know about Blue’s dishonesty. Mackey, who often operates outside official channels, is likely debating whether to report it. Given Mackey’s past mistakes – she used to be a Navy helicopter pilot – and the leniency she’s often been shown by her superiors, she’s used to navigating tricky situations.
Despite a temporary replacement, it appears Blue will likely return to her role on NCIS: Sydney. Mavournee Hazel, who plays Bluebird, is still featured in the show’s opening credits with scenes from past seasons. While a new character is currently working with the team in the upcoming Season 3, Episode 3, it’s improbable that the show would permanently remove such a popular character, especially after the events of the episode “True Blue.”
