NCIS Revealed A Dark Twist With Parker’s Mom’s Death Certificate, And I’m Wondering How It’s Going To Affect The Lily Storyline

Warning: SPOILERS for the NCIS episode “God Only Knows” are ahead!

The first two episodes of NCIS Season 23 resolved the story involving Carla Marino, but there are still ongoing mysteries surrounding Alden Parker, played by Gary Cole. Viewers are still learning about Lily, the young girl Parker connected with after being injured, and Jimmy Palmer’s discovery of an issue with the death certificate of Parker’s mother, Eleanor, who passed away when he was a child, promises further developments.

The recent finale of “God Only Knows” on the 2025 TV season uncovered a surprising contradiction, setting up a new mystery for the show NCIS. Considering what we’ve learned about Lily – who is a real person, not just something Parker imagined – I’m now curious about how this will connect to the truth about his mother’s past.

What Parker Learned About His Mother’s Death

In the episode “Page-Turner,” Jimmy confirmed his doubts about Eleanor’s death certificate. He then shared his discovery with Parker at the beginning of “God Only Knows.” For years, everyone believed Eleanor died in a drunk driving accident. However, Jimmy pointed out that the coroner’s report, which mentioned a severe head injury at the back of her skull, didn’t align with injuries expected from a head-on car crash. This led Jimmy to suspect she might have been murdered, so he asked Parker if he could have her body exhumed to investigate further.

Exclusive NCIS Coverage

It’s amazing that NCIS is reaching 500 episodes! Sean Murray shared with me his thoughts on why the show continues to resonate with audiences.

Now that investigators are considering the possibility that Eleanor Parker was murdered, her son reacted surprisingly. He wasn’t pleased that Jimmy Palmer went beyond simply locating her grave, as originally requested. Instead, he was upset that Jimmy turned the matter into a larger investigation and involved the entire NCIS team. Parker had hoped for peace of mind regarding his mother, but the new investigation has reopened old pain.

By the end of the episode, Parker had a change of heart after talking to a chaplain connected to the week’s case (you can see what happened in the episode “God Knows” on Paramount+). The chaplain suggested that Parker might be ignoring a message from God, which often comes through the people we’re closest to. The chaplain warned that finding the truth might be difficult. Considering this, Parker finally gave Jimmy permission to exhume Eleanor’s body.

What Does This Mean For The Lily Storyline?

We’ve established Lily is real because Alden Parker saw her in a photo of his mother’s car crash. It’s only a matter of time before Lily’s story connects with the investigation, so the question is how. If Eleanor Parker was murdered, is Lily connected to the killer, or someone involved in her death? What was she doing at the crash site? And more broadly, who were Eleanor’s connections that might have led to her being targeted?

There’s also the mystery of the woman Roman Parker was with before his death – will Will Parker cross paths with her as he investigates his mother? With only two episodes left of NCIS in 2025, it’s uncertain if we’ll get answers this year. However, given the current pace, I believe these storylines will likely be resolved when NCIS Season 23 concludes in 2026.
