A controversial crime drama is drawing a large audience on its streaming release. Though the first season, which premiered on NBC last January, received mixed reviews from both critics and viewers, NBC decided to renew the show for a second season. The premiere of Season 2 has proven to be very popular.
According to FlixPatrol, the series The Hunting Party is currently the second most popular show on Peacock in the U.S. The show’s second season launched on January 8th, and just four days later, it’s already a hit. Despite mixed reviews, the JJ Bailey drama has found a solid spot among Peacock’s top ten programs.
NBC’s The Hunting Party Has an Abysmal Rotten Tomatoes Score
While Peacock subscribers are watching The Hunting Party, critics haven’t been as impressed. The show currently has a 25% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but viewers seem to like it more, giving it an 83% score. Reviews for the second season are still pending.
In a review for AV Club, Max Gao points out that while the idea behind The Hunting Party—tracking down serial killers made worse by experimental treatments—sounds interesting, the show itself is surprisingly boring.
Joel Keller’s review for Decider agrees, describing The Hunting Party as a typical action show filled with predictable or pointless plot twists.
Isabella Soares at Collider notes that NBC’s new true crime show is just engaging enough to hold viewers’ attention, but it feels predictable and doesn’t offer much that viewers haven’t already figured out.
Manifest Star Melissa Roxburgh Returns in The Hunting Party
Melissa Roxburgh, known for her role in The Hunting Party, has worked with NBC before. She previously starred in the supernatural drama Manifest, which aired on NBC before being canceled and then finished its run with a final season on Netflix.
In The Hunting Party, Roxburgh stars as Rebecca “Bex” Henderson, a former FBI agent. She’s put in charge of tracking down and recapturing several of the world’s most dangerous serial killers after they break out of a secret government prison. The series also delves into the mystery surrounding the prison itself and the explosion that led to the escape.
Good news for fans of Manifest! A reunion with Josh Dallas, who starred in Manifest, is coming in Season 2 of The Hunting Party. He’ll be playing one of the escaped serial killers in Episode 8.
Nick Wechsler, Patrick Sabongui, Josh McKenzie, and Sara Garcia are also part of the cast. JJ Bailey, who created the series, and Jake Coburn work together as showrunners and executive producers on The Hunting Party.
As a huge fan of The Hunting Party, I make sure to catch the new episodes every Thursday night at 10 p.m. Eastern on NBC. And the best part? If I miss it, or just want to rewatch, it’s available to stream on Peacock the very next day!
