I’m so excited! It’s been nearly twenty years, but one of my favorite franchises starring Nicolas Cage is still going strong. He’s become famous for totally being himself in every role – whether he’s an action star, a scary villain, a romantic lead, or even a quirky professor! But his role as a treasure hunter in that amazing family series will always be special to me. And now, it sounds like he’s bringing that character back, even after all this time!
The first National Treasure movie, released in 2004 and directed by Jon Turteltaub, stars Nicolas Cage as Benjamin Franklin Gates, a historian and treasure hunter. The film follows Gates as he unravels a mystery connected to the Freemasons, the Revolutionary War, and a daring plot to steal the Declaration of Independence. A sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, came out in 2007. Though both movies received varied reactions, they offer a classic, family-friendly action-adventure experience that many viewers enjoy.

After years of speculation, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has finally confirmed that a third National Treasure movie is happening. He recently told The Direct at the Producer’s Guild Awards that the film is progressing nicely, and the team is currently developing the script.
The studio recently tried to revive the National Treasure series with a Disney+ show, Edge of History. While it featured returning stars Harvey Keitel and Justin Bartha, it didn’t attract as many viewers as the original National Treasure movies starring Nicolas Cage and was canceled after one season. A third movie would likely be much more popular, particularly if the plans previously shared by original director Jon Turteltaub were implemented.
Director Jon Turteltaub recently shared that Nicolas Cage, Justin Bartha, and Diane Kruger are all eager to return for a third National Treasure film in 2024. Everyone involved wants to make it happen! Producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed this, stating they plan to send the script to Nicolas Cage and will move forward with the movie if he approves.

The director hasn’t revealed much about the story, but he’s suggested that Sean Bean might return as the villain, Ian Howe. He playfully hinted at this possibility, saying it could be happening, but wouldn’t confirm anything definitively. If Bean did return, it would likely be a thrilling moment for viewers.
