Fans of Stargate got a glimpse of the franchise’s beginnings with the 2018 web series Stargate: Origins, but it’s been more than ten years since a full Stargate TV show, Stargate Universe, was on the air. Now, that wait is coming to an end. Amazon MGM announced last week that they are developing a new Stargate series. Martin Gero will be leading the show as showrunner, and he shared a heartfelt message about how much the original Stargate shows mean to him.
These days, Gero is best known for his work spearheading shows like Blindspot and the Quantum Leap revival, but he also spent the earlier years of his career working on Stargate SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis and Stargate Universe in various capacities. Taking to his Instagram, Gero shared a photo of himself 20 years ago, during his first week working on Atlantis of a story editor, standing on Stage 6 at Bridge Studios in Vancouver near the show’s Stargate. He continued:
I learned everything I know about storytelling from the five seasons and over 150 episodes of Stargate – it’s deeply ingrained in how I approach creating shows. Even after working on many other projects, I always felt Stargate deserved a revival. Now, surprisingly, I’m the one bringing it back! I’m thrilled to announce that Stargate is returning to television on Prime Video, and I’ve been entrusted with leading this exciting new chapter.
Fans of sci-fi series Stargate will soon have a new home for their favorite show! Just like Star Trek on Paramount+ and Star Wars on Disney+, Stargate is coming to a major streaming service. You’ll need an Amazon Prime Video subscription to watch it. While the franchise started with a 1994 movie featuring Kurt Russell and James Spader, and SG-1 led to a couple of direct-to-video films, Stargate has really become popular through its television series.

Get a 30-day free trial of Amazon Prime Video and unlock access to the entire Stargate collection, plus a huge library of movies and TV shows. After your trial, it’s $14.99 per month, or you can save 22% with an annual fee of $139. Enjoy original series like Rings of Power and The Boys. See the deal here.
It’s wonderful to see Martin Gero, after years of working on the original Stargate series, now leading the effort to revive it. It feels like a fitting full-circle moment, and he’s expressed his thanks to the dedicated Stargate fans who have continued to support the show over the years. He explained it perfectly when he said:
This is for our dedicated fans who’ve supported us through events, re-watched our content, and remained loyal. And to everyone just discovering our world – get ready for something amazing! Stay tuned, because we have a lot more coming… Chevron One…encrypted.
As a huge Stargate fan, I’m so excited about the revival! We don’t know much about the story yet, but Martin Gero has said it’s going to be a continuation of what we already know and love, not a complete restart. That’s amazing because it means characters from SG-1, Atlantis, and Universe could potentially come back! Of course, they also want to make sure the show is welcoming to new viewers so they can bring in a whole new generation of fans, which I think is a smart move.
The new Stargate series probably won’t be ready to air until after 2026, but we’re hoping to hear some news about it soon. Until then, you can rewatch the original Stargate shows on Prime Video, and the 1994 movie is available for free on streaming services like Tubi and Pluto TV.
