Disney’s animated movie Hercules, released in 1977, is currently popular with fans again. Inspired by the Greek myths of Heracles, the film was known for its detailed animation and funny, pop culture-based humor, which explains its renewed success nearly 50 years later. But Disney+ offers many other films that could be considered even better than this classic, comedic take on Greek mythology.
Disney is known for its groundbreaking animated films, which have consistently won awards and redefined the art of animation. Many of these beloved stories are now easily accessible on Disney+.
The Lion King Led Disney’s Renaissance
Released in 1994, The Lion King, directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff, tells the moving story of Simba, a young lion prince who must reclaim his father Mufasa’s kingdom. The film is visually stunning, featuring vast African landscapes and a huge variety of animals, all wrapped around a deeply emotional story.
The story of The Lion King is epic and emotionally powerful, resonating with audiences of all ages. It’s a truly perfect film – the songs are still popular today! Though the recent live-action version did well in theaters, the original animated movie remains a classic and is the highest-grossing traditionally animated film of all time, and for good reason.
Beauty and the Beast Depicted One Of The Strongest Disney Princesses
While it seems like a simple fairytale, the 1991 animated film offered a much richer story. The film centered around Belle, a smart and bookish young woman who bravely sacrificed her freedom to save her father from a fearsome Beast living in a castle. As Belle settled into her isolated new life, she uncovered the castle’s secrets and learned about the curse that transformed the Beast’s appearance.
As a lifelong Disney fan, I’ve always considered Beauty and the Beast a real landmark film for the studio. The animation was just stunning for its time, and the music? Absolutely gorgeous. But it wasn’t just pretty to look at – the characters really stuck with me long after I left the theater. It was a huge deal at the Academy Awards, winning for both its score and a fantastic original song. Looking back, I think Beauty and the Beast was truly ahead of its time, not just in how it looked, but in the story it told.
Aladdin Was Equal Parts Heart And Humor
Considered a highlight of Disney’s Renaissance period, Aladdin brilliantly mixed current pop culture with exciting action and quick-witted comedy, all within a sweet love story between the street urchin Aladdin and Princess Jasmine. Beyond its memorable characters – including a talking magic carpet – the film is famous for Robin Williams’ incredible performance as the Genie, a wildly funny and energetic spirit who grants wishes after being freed from a lamp.
If you enjoyed the fun and excitement of Hercules, then Aladdin takes it to the next level, offering a wonderfully cheerful adventure set in Arabia. The story follows Aladdin as he tries to win the princess’s heart, while a villainous character attempts to steal the Genie’s lamp, making for a quick and lively movie. Aladdin’s success was also recognized with Academy Awards for Best Original Score and Best Original Song, solidifying its place as a Disney musical masterpiece.
Tarzan Was A Visual Marvel
The 1990s were a particularly innovative time for the studio, as they pioneered new methods to enhance their storytelling. In 1999, Tarzan transported viewers to the jungle, following the story of a young orphan raised by gorillas after losing his parents. To create the illusion of 3D movement during Tarzan’s acrobatic swings, Disney developed a technique called “Deep Canvas,” which cleverly used 2D animation to achieve a three-dimensional effect.
Beyond the exciting action, particularly after Tarzan meets Jane, the movie Tarzan boasts a truly memorable soundtrack by Phil Collins. Songs such as “You’ll Be in My Heart,” “Son of Man,” and “Strangers Like Me” beautifully capture Tarzan’s emotional journey as he searches for his place in the world. Tarzan is a complete and captivating film that still feels fresh and enjoyable even after thirty years.
Mulan Is An Empowering Disney Story
While the story of Hercules is inspiring, Mulan really raises the bar with its strong and capable heroine. The movie tells the story of Fa Mulan, a young woman who bravely disguises herself as a man to serve in the army in place of her father, and goes on to demonstrate her bravery and intelligence in battle. Mulan also stood out for its beautiful visuals and a unique setting, showcasing the stunning landscapes of Southeast Asia, which was a departure from typical Disney films.
Mulan breaks traditional expectations for women, but her story isn’t simply about female empowerment – it’s about her deep love for her family and her desire to uphold their honor. She’s one of Disney’s most well-developed characters, and the movie is also genuinely funny, thanks to her comical dragon companion, Mushu. Mulan continues to be a classic Disney animated film, full of both heart and suspense.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame Is Bold And Mature
As a huge Disney fan, I always appreciated how The Hunchback of Notre Dame dared to be different. It’s a surprisingly dark and emotional take on Victor Hugo’s story. It centers around Quasimodo, a gentle soul born with a physical deformity and orphaned when Judge Frollo tragically killed his mother. Frollo then raises Quasimodo in isolation within Notre Dame cathedral, where he essentially becomes its caretaker. Despite being kept hidden away, Quasimodo bravely ventures out to a festival and immediately falls for a beautiful Romani woman named Esmeralda.
Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a particularly thoughtful film, tackling complex subjects like faith, desire, and the dangers of unchecked power, as seen through Frollo’s attempts to control both Quasimodo and the city’s newcomers. While it’s a Disney movie, the film’s dark, Gothic atmosphere sets it apart.
Frozen Kickstarted a Global Phenomenon
Before the release of Frozen in 2013, Disney princesses hadn’t captured audiences’ imaginations in a while. The film introduced Princesses Anna and Elsa, who lived in the kingdom of Arendelle. The story really takes off when Elsa accidentally uses her ice powers to cover the kingdom in winter and flees to an isolated ice palace, fearing she’ll be seen as a witch. Determined to help, Anna embarks on a journey to find Elsa and help her learn to control her powers and reconnect with her compassionate side.
Frozen was remarkable for its focus on the relationship between sisters, a refreshing change from typical romantic storylines. The film’s songs, particularly “Let It Go,” were incredibly popular worldwide and contributed to its status as a cultural sensation. Thanks to its stunning animation, humor, and emotional depth, Frozen continues to be a beloved and modern Disney classic.
Moana Was A Vibrant Breath Of Fresh Air
The 2016 Disney film Moana tells the story of a brave young woman, the daughter of a Polynesian chief, who journeys across the ocean to return a sacred relic to the goddess Te Fiti and rescue her people. She’s joined by the playful demigod Maui, and together they discover Moana’s inner strength and her true purpose. The movie is especially praised for its stunning animation, which vividly and beautifully brings the world of ancient Polynesia to life.
Disney once again defied traditional fairy tale tropes, offering a heroine with goals beyond just finding romance. Moana embarks on a thrilling journey, ultimately saving her people and becoming a powerful role model for viewers of all ages. Overall, Moana is a touching story about bravery, self-discovery, and the spirit of adventure.
