Okay, fight fans, get ready! It looks like we’re heading back to the brutal world of Mortal Kombat much sooner than expected with a new installment! From what I’m hearing, this sequel will pick up right after the events of the 2021 reboot. Remember how Sonya Blade, Jax, and Cole Young were tasked with finding and training the next generation of Earthrealm warriors, especially Johnny Cage? Well, that’s where we’re jumping in, and it sounds like things are about to get seriously intense!
The upcoming Mortal Kombat II film will star Karl Urban as Cage and Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn. Originally planned for release on October 24, 2025, the movie’s release date has been moved to May 2026. Warner Bros. reportedly made this change to capitalize on the success of the 2025 Superman movie by releasing another big film during the summer months.
Warner Bros. has shifted the release date of Mortal Kombat II again. Originally moved from October 2025 to May 15, 2026, the film will now arrive in theaters on May 8—a week earlier than planned.
The release date for Mortal Kombat II has been changed, and this shift actually improves the film’s potential for box office success. May 2026 is mostly filled with smaller films, and the weekend of May 15th, specifically, will see the release of only a few titles like Poetic License, starring Maude Apatow, and the thriller Is God Is.
As a movie fan, May looks like an amazing month! It kicks off with the fun of Animal Friends, starring Ryan Reynolds, and then The Devil Wears Prada 2 hits theaters. And to top it all off, The Mandalorian and Grogu is coming out at the very end of the month! Plus, Mortal Kombat II is a bit different – it’s aimed at a more adult audience, so it doesn’t really compete with the other films coming out. It’s a win-win for everyone!
Choosing a release date that avoids competing with the younger audience drawn to The Mandalorian is a smart move for Mortal Kombat II. The first film, released in late April 2021, did reasonably well in theaters despite the challenges of the pandemic and being available on HBO Max at the same time. Therefore, continuing to release films in the late spring could help build a stronger future for the franchise.
